    Abstract: A semiconductor bridge (SCB) device. In one embodiment, the SCB device includes a laminate layer on top of an insulating material, wherein the laminate layer comprises a series of layers of at least two reactive materials, and wherein the laminate layer comprises two relatively large sections that substantially cover the surface area of the insulating material, and a bridge section joining the two relatively large sections. At least one conductive contact pad is coupled to at least one of the series of layers, wherein a predetermined current through the conductive contact pad causes the bridge section to initiate a reaction in which the laminate layer is involved. In one embodiment, the SCB device includes an integrated diode formed by an interface of the insulating material with another material, such as a metal.

    Abstract: Disclosed are compositions that are useful as microgas-generators, which can be used as propellants in airbags or seatbelt pretensioners. The compositions use a fuel which comprises an organic compound having a high ratio of the number of reactive carbon-oxygen groups to the total number of carbon atoms. The compositions also optionally use an oxidizer to supply oxygen to the fuel and/or a binding agent to form the fuel and optional oxidizer into particles. The compositions are useful as ignitors or squibbs, and can be used in industrial tools, seatbelt pretensioning systems, and airbags.

    Abstract: The present invention discloses an improved apparatus for performing safe and reliable built-in testing (BIT) of a laser initiated ordnance device. The system transmits light energy from a laser through optical fibers to achieve initiation of pyrotechnic or explosive charges and other ordnance. In the preferred embodiment, a separate BIT return fiber is included in the system in addition to the energy transmission fiber. The invention also incorporates a "telescope" comprising a pair of gradient-index (GRIN) rod lenses in series to first collimate and then reconcentrate light emitted by the energy transmitting fiber, while reflecting part of the light to an image at the face of the BIT fiber. Alternatively, an arrangement using a pair of aspheric silica lenses can be substituted for the GRIN lenses. The fraction of the light reflected to the BIT fiber can be controlled by specifying the reflectance at one of the lens end surfaces.

    Abstract: This invention discloses a method of fabricating an electroexplosive device which utilizes a semiconductor bridge as an ignition element. The semiconductor bridge is electrically connected to a metal header by a small, low resistance contact to the extension of bridge material and through an insulating silicon substrate to an eutectic bond created by gold plating on the metal header and the silicon. The second electrode of the bridge circuit is connected via wire bonds to one or two conducting pins which penetrate the metal header and are insulated by surrounding glass. A redundant connection via two conducting pins insulated from the header to one electrode of the semiconductor bridge allows a post assembly test of the integrity of the wire bonds, thereby increasing reliability of the device.

    Abstract: The invention relates to providing a reliable means for controlling a laser diode in an initiator for starting a pyrotechnic reaction in an ordnance. The circuit has an array of capacitors to tune the coupling of the input signal to provide for more efficient power transfer from an electrical energy system. The circuit contains a full wave rectifier to provide DC power to operate the circuit. The circuit also contains a two stage current amplifier that is controlled by a differential amplifier. The differential amplifier compares a voltage proportional to the current flowing through the controlled laser diode with a reference voltage. The differential amplifier controls the current amplifier to limit the current that can pass through the laser diode. The circuitry that provides the reference voltage has the ability to drive the reference voltage to zero when the input signal is removed or is too low to drive the circuit properly.

    Abstract: An air bag initiator including a main body and squib. The squib includes a charge mounted in a charge holder, a header press fitted onto the charge holder and a cup welded to the header. The squib also includes first and second lead pins and a bridgewire. A cap snap fits onto the main body and holds the squib in place during subsequent assembly operations. Ferrite beads for frequency attenuation and potting material are located in a cavity of the main body. The first lead is mounted off center in a bore passing through the header to allow bridgewires of different lengths to be used with the same header design. The cup includes a depression to maintain a single explosive powder charge under pressure and in contact with the bridgewire. An outer cup can be welded to the housing and an insulating cup can be provided between the cup of the squid and the outer cup to provide enhanced hermetic sealing of the charge and prevent current from passing between the cups.

A relative comparison is formed of light in the first wavelength band reflected back through the fiber optic conduit and light in the second wavelength band reflected back through the fiber optic conduit. Reliable continuity testing of a fiber optic conduit including multiple in-line connectors is thereby made possible.

The first switching device is responsive to one of the complementary output signals for causing a current to flow in one direction through at least a portion of the primary coil during a first half cycle of oscillation, and the second switching device is responsive to another of the complementary output signals for causing a current to flow in an opposite direction through at least a portion of the primary coil. The integrated circuit has an enable feature and includes additional protection circuitry for enhancing the safety of the radio frequency attenuating connector.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to ordnance ignition systems and methods having significantly improved safety and reliability characteristics. In a preferred embodiment, laser energy is used to fire both deflagrating initiators and deflagration-to-detonation devices via fiber optic cable assemblies (FOCA). Relative to known explosive transfer assemblies, FOCAs are lighter, more reliable, less costly, and can be easily and thoroughly tested nondestructively. Although the laser initiated devices (LID) contain moderately sensitive pyrotechnics, their electrical isolation renders them immune from inadvertent initiation by electromagnetic and abnormal optical environments.

Low cost and versatility are provided with great accuracy due to, for example, use of a 32 element pyroelectric array. Such pyroelectric material is also tolerant of temperature changes and inertial forces.

    Abstract: A thin film bridge initiator is mounted on a header for use in a detonator where a primer is activated by heat from the thin film. The initiator includes a substrate which carries a pair of metallic beam-type leads connected by a thin film bridge which activates the adjacent primer. The beam-type leads are affixed (welded) to a pair of electrical pins which are on adjacent sides of a slot in the header. The entire structure is very cost effective, reliable and provides fast functioning and safety. In addition, a process of manufacturing several bridge initiators at one time on a single wafer is provided.

    Abstract: Electrical circuit continuity test apparatus for the high energy discharge circuitry of a firing unit couples to the stripline transmission line of the discharge circuitry but adds minimal inductance to the circuit. This is achieved by a coupling transformer having a core of high magnetic permeability alloy which loops around one of the strip conductors of the stripline. The primary winding, which couples into test circuit is merely another conductor wrapped around this core. The primary winding senses the reflected capacitive impedance of the discharge circuitry which includes an added capacitor to bypass the high energy switch of the discharge circuitry.Impedance sensing is accomplished by a resistance bridge driven by an oscillator and where imbalances indicating a defective circuit are sensed by a synchronous demodulator and a window comparator.
