Patent number: 10279157Abstract: Embodiments for superficial tissue compliance modulation and negative pressure wound therapy for stabilization of a chronic percutaneous implant are disclosed. An external cap is coupled to a compliance gradient of progressively decreasing stiffness. Together the external cap and compliance gradient act as a stress shield that allows forces that would otherwise act on the skin at the skin-implant interface to be dissipated over a larger area. In addition, negative pressure and fluids may be applied through negative pressure and fluid adapters, respectively, to the skin-implant interface, the status of which may be further monitored through the use of one or more sensors.Type: GrantFiled: March 14, 2014Date of Patent: May 7, 2019Assignee: Rehabilitation Institute of ChicagoInventors: Todd A. Patent number: 10226361Abstract: Implementations of a quasi-passive assistive device are disclosed. Such a device may comprise a spring mechanism that increases stiffness similar to a biological ankle. In one implementation, the spring mechanism may comprise a piston, valve, springs, or other elements to match a biological stiffness profile similar to that of a biological ankle. In one implementation, an apparatus for an artificial ankle is disclosed, comprising a piston coupled to a spring and the piston connected to a valve. Patent number: 10213324Abstract: We present a novel swing phase control module for powered transfemoral prostheses based on minimum jerk theory. The control module allows physiologically appropriate swing movement at any walking speed, regardless of the stance controller action. Preliminary validation in a transfemoral amputee subject demonstrates that the control module provides physiological swing timing, without speed or patient-specific tuning.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2015Date of Patent: February 26, 2019Assignee: Rehabilitation Institute of ChicagoInventors: Tommaso Lenzi, Levi Hargrove, Jon Sensinger

Patent number: 9907489Abstract: This disclosure relates to a hierarchy of classifiers, including linear discriminant analysis (LDA) classifiers, arranged to provide simultaneous control of multiple degrees of freedom of a prosthetic. The high accuracy of the hierarchical approach allows pattern recognition techniques to be extended to permit simultaneous control, potentially allowing amputees to produce more fluid, life-like movements, ultimately increasing their quality of life. The hierarchy may also be used to control a biological interface that allows input to computers for persons with disabilities, used as a potential video-game controller, and used as an input interface for tablets, and phones.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 2013Date of Patent: March 6, 2018Assignee: Rehabilitation Institute of ChicagoInventors: Levi Hargrove, Aaron Young

Patent number: 9872637Abstract: A medical evaluation system includes an I/O module, a processing module, and an analysis module. The I/O module receives sensory data obtained by a motion sensor disposed in a mobile device carried by a patient at least when the patient is in a non-clinical environment. The processing module extracts medically relevant data from the sensory data received from the sensor in the mobile device. The relevant data includes one or more features of interest in the sensory data. The analysis module derives one or more surrogate biomarkers from the relevant data. The surrogate biomarkers represent at least one of a state or a progression of a medical condition of the patient. The mobile device may be a mobile phone carried by the patient and the sensor may include at least one of an accelerometer or a gyroscope that generates the sensory data to represent movements of the patient.Type: GrantFiled: April 21, 2011Date of Patent: January 23, 2018Assignees: The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Northwestern UniversityInventors: Konrad Kording, Mark Albert, Andrew Levien

Patent number: 9861499Abstract: A gripping device that comprises a first moveable jaw and a second fixed jaw is disclosed. The gripping device has a handle operatively engaged to the first moveable jaw and a connecting link operatively engaged to the first moveable jaw. The connecting link is positioned in at least one of a first position or a second position. The change in the position of the connecting link allows the gripping device to have either a default closed position or a default open position, which can be defined by voluntarily-open or voluntary-close modes of operation, respectively. The first moveable jaw moves in either of the modes of operation. The change in the mode of operation is accomplished through use of a connecting link that is passed through a singularity during the switching process to achieve the different output positions and directions.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 2013Date of Patent: January 9, 2018Assignee: Rehabilitation Institute of ChicagoInventor: Jonathon Sensinger
