  • Patent number: 4343980
Abstract: An electrical resistance spot welding system and method is disclosed. The system has adjustable output power circuitry for applying electrical heating energy to a weld site by way of weld tips, in accordance with a welding operation. An energy monitor senses instantaneous accumulated energy applied during the welding operation, and terminates the operation when an adjustable predetermined total energy has been applied. Other circuitry monitors applied welding voltage, and derives therefrom a signal which is a function of the energy density per unit area applied at the weld site. Circuitry responds to the energy density sensing to control the energy monitor and the power circuitry to govern the total energy applied in the welding operation.

  • Patent number: 4337606
Abstract: Included in a panel assembly are panels each having opposite side walls terminating respectively in a standing fixed male seam and a standing deformable female seam. Similar ones of these panels are laterally joined to one another in a secure manner atop underlying support elements by mounting clips disposed intermediate juxtaposed side walls of adjacent panels. Assembly is achieved by sequentially inserting an uppermost flange on the mounting clips into a groove in the male seam of a first panel prior to rotating the clips downwardly juxtaposition the panel side wall and anchoring the clips to the support elements. Then a next panel is lowered with a downwardly facing cavity on its female seam overlying the first panel male seam, followed by roll-crimping of a portion of the uppermost female seam about the innermost male seam and mounting clip flange.

  • Patent number: 4312230
Abstract: A mounting system for maintaining a transducer 20 in contact with a pipe 12 during testing. The system is mounted to a frame 32 which is in turn mounted for movement along a length of pipe. A first step in the testing procedure is to position the frame 32 a distance away from the pipe dependent on the pipe diameter. A carriage 34 coupled to the frame is then lowered to a scanning position and scanning takes place as the frame is moved along the pipe. A universal joint mechanism 36 connecting the carriage to the transducer 20 allows up and down and side to side movement of the transducer and thereby allows scanning to continue on pipes with bows and other irregularities along their length. When the pipe end is neared the carriage 34 is retracted away from the pipe 12 by action of a spring mechanism 154. In this retracted position downward movement of the transducer is prevented by a ball support 146, 147 coupled to the transducer and contacting a supporting surface 149 of the carriage.

  • Patent number: 4307904
Abstract: A door latching assembly readily adaptable to a standard cylindrical lock provision includes a unitary bolt/handle member substantially shielded by a fixed cover with at least a portion of the handle confined within a retainer member which defines alternate positions of the bolt and establishes a slot with the cover to provide a guide for the handle. Mating lock receiving openings in the handle, retainer member and cover provide for the application of either one or two lock devices to immobilize the bolt in a door locking position. By the symmetrical formation or assembly of certain components and the selective positioning of the lock receiving openings, the mechanism of this invention may be alternately utilized in either a left-hand or right-hand door lock installation without any structural modification of the components.

  • Patent number: 4306631
Abstract: A noise barrier or other type wall or building assembly includes a plurality of spans each extending between spaced apart posts and having top and bottom girts affixed to the posts and in turn supporting a plurality or series of vertically disposed panels. Unique mating interlock elements integrally formed along both lateral edges of the wall or building exterior panels allow the sequential interconnection of all panels in a series by means of a rotating displacement of the individual panels to yield multilateral interlocking of the panels. The panel faces are configured to provide shadow texture, while masking of the posts and top girts in a free-standing type wall is obtained by a split cover assembly and split cap trim, respectively.

  • Patent number: 4290751
Abstract: A hot blast stove for preheating combustion air for an associated blast furnace, having a continuous, substantially cylindrical shaped peripheral wall extending from a base to a domed cover. The peripheral wall includes a first cylindrical portion defined by a refractory ring wall of a predetermined thickness, surrounded by insulation, and enclosed by a continuous metal shell; and, a second, diametrically larger, cylindrical portion disposed above the first cylindrical portion, defined by a continuation of the refractory ring wall of the first portion, surrounded by a predetermined thickness of insulating brick and insulation. The second portion is enclosed by a continuous metal shell which joins the domed cover. An annular interconnecting portion joins the cylindrical portions and includes a metal shell that diverges outwardly from the metal shell of the first portion to obliquely join the metal shell of the cylindrical portion.

  • Patent number: 4288164
Abstract: A method for viewing a glowing steel body such as a billet for flaw inspection or identification. The process identification includes the step of providing identifying indicia on a surface of the billet. The billet is viewed by illuminating the billet with a source of bright light to create shadows so that the indicia or flaws can be seen, and viewing the billet from behind a protective device which permits intermittent viewing of the object. Apparatus for carrying out the method includes a shutter by which the light emitted by the billet is attenuated. The shutter employs a pair of rotatable disks having spaced, parallel axes of rotation and the disks are overlapped near their peripheries. Each disk includes a viewing opening disposed near its periphery. When the disks are rotated in the same direction and at different angular speeds, the viewing openings periodically are aligned for short periods of time.

  • Patent number: 4274923
Abstract: Method and apparatus for extruding incandescent coke from a coke oven and for quenching the coke prior to transport thereof from the point where extruded. The method and apparatus include enhanced air pollutant emission control characteristics. The apparatus includes an inverted, truncated-pyramid container cradled within the frame of a vehicle similar to that used to transport molten metal. Prior to coke extrusion the vehicle permits indexing of the container under the plane through which the extruded coke falls so as to receive all of such extruded coke. While indexed and immobile, the container is adapted to mate with a correspondingly indexed hood having emission control means adapted to be operable during both the extrusion and quenching of the coke at the indexed position of the container/hood. Use of the present invention, in comparison to the prior art, further minimizes the escape of uncleaned, air pollutant-emitting fume, both by virtue of combustion suppression and exhaust gas cleaning.

  • Patent number: 4270949
Abstract: The usual oxygen lance, and a coating lance, are disposed in upright and spaced-side-by-side relation for selective lowering into the BOF vessel when the latter is in the normal upright position it occupies for refinement of its metallic charge. Preferably, the coating lance is lowered into the vessel immediately after the latter has been charged with scrap and molten iron and moved to its upright position. At this time the oxygen lance is in standby position while refractory coating material is forced through the coating lance and outwardly of its nozzle to coat various areas of the vessel lining. Thereafter, the coating lance is withdrawn from the vessel and the oxygen lance is inserted and the refining process is begun. At this time, the coating lance is held in standby position.

  • Patent number: 4252473
Abstract: A composite pile includes a wooden section and a helically corrugated shell secured to the wooden section by a transition fitting. The transition fitting is fitted telescopically to a tubular end portion of the shell by a circumferential weld which is embedded in the wooden section. Because the weld is very strong and is disposed within the wooden section, the strength of transition-to-shell connection is increased over prior composite piles. The pile manufacture includes the step of removing corrugations from the end of a shell by squeezing the end of the shell between radially movable, annular die segments.
