Abstract: A ratchet hinge for a knee or elbow orthosis having a pair of struts, connected to one strut is a pair of plates in spaced relation to one another. The other strut is pivotably connected between the plates and has a slot formed therein for receiving a locking assembly. The plates have a plurality of ratchets on their outer periphery and a locking slot formed in the edge of the plates. The locking assembly has a spring biased locking pin disposed between two plats such that the pin engages the plates to lock the hinge or allow limited movement.

Abstract: An ankle brace having a pair of shells with a pad attached to the inner surface of the shells. Attached to the pads is a U-shaped strip positioned to cup the medial and lateral malleous portions of an ankle and extending from the tip of the shell to the opposite end of the shell. At least one strap is connected to the shells and extends around the shell, and an ankle strap is adjustably connected to the shells.

Abstract: An abductor hinge having a first and a second connector. The first connector having a hub with a projection that extends outwardly from the hub and a central bore that extends through the hub and the projection. The second connector has a hub juxtapositioned to the hub of the first connector, and having a recess that frictionally receives the projection. A central bore extends through the hub of the second connector to the recess and is in alignment with the bore of the first connector. A screw extends through the bores of the first and second connectors to secure the connectors together.

Abstract: An ankle fracture brace has a foot support portion which receives a foot of a patient. A convertible leg support portion receives a leg of the patient. The leg support portion includes a pair of spaced vertical arms connected by arm lower ends to sides of the foot support portion so as to extend upwardly past sides of an ankle of a patient and terminate adjacent sides of a calf of a patient. Upper end and lower end straps secure the leg support portion to the leg of the patient. These upper end and lower end straps are connected to the vertical arms adjacent the calf and ankle, respectively. A horizontal break line is formed in each of the arms between the upper end and lower end straps permitting a user to selectively sever the arms on the break lines to accommodate different patient uses of the ankle brace.

Abstract: An ankle fracture brace has a foot support portion which receives a foot of a patient. A convertible leg support portion receives a leg of the patient. The leg support portion includes a pair of spaced vertical arms connected by arm lower ends to sides of the foot support portion so as to extend upwardly past sides of an ankle of a patient and terminate adjacent sides of a calf of a patient. Upper end and lower end straps secure the leg support portion to the leg of the patient. These upper end and lower end straps are connected to the vertical arms adjacent the calf and ankle, respectively. A horizontal break line is formed in each of the arms between the upper end and lower end straps permitting a user to selectively sever the arms on the break lines to accommodate different patient uses of the ankle brace.

Abstract: A foot orthosis with a detachable sole plate has a pair of elongated retainer walls which are integrally formed with the toe plate adjacent the Velcro® strip to help stabilize any lateral movement of the orthosis with respect to the toe plate and the sole plate.

Abstract: A dorsal resting hand orthosis has a substantially rigid splint member which has a wrist portion adapted to fit and receive the dorsal side of a patient's wrist. The splint also includes two lateral supports connected to a finger portion. The lateral supports are wide enough to allow a patient's knuckles to slide easily in between. The finger portion is attached to a thumb portion and together are adapted to receive the cupped hand of a patient who has their fingers juxtapositioned with the thumb in space gripping position opposite of the patient's fingers. A resilient liner extends along the inner surface of the splint and is easily removable. Straps are secured to the liner to secure the splint to the patient's forearm, wrist, fingers, and thumb.

Abstract: An anklet for a foot orthosis has a one-piece member having a sole portion, opposite side portions each terminating in a flap element, a heel portion and a fastening strap. The sole portion has a pocket to receive the foot portion of the orthosis. A soft liner is attached to the interior surface of the anklet. The fastening strap extends over the overlapped flap elements to reinforce the engaged fastening elements on the interior surface of the straps.

Abstract: A hinge structure has first and second hinge elements having inner and outer ends with the inner ends being pivotally secured together. One of said hinge elements has a series of ratchet teeth associated therewith. The other hinge element has a keeper element slidably mounted thereon to engage, and to be disengaged, with the ratchet teeth to cause the hinge elements to be locked and unlocked, respectively, to each other. A cam element on the hinge structure is operatively connected to the keeper element to slidably move the keeper element into or out of engagement with the ratchet teeth.

Abstract: A foot orthosis has an L-shaped support member having leg, heel and foot portions. An anklet and a plurality of straps extend around the support member to engage the burned foot and secure the foot to the support member. The anklet and straps have support surfaces comprised of a closed foam material that will not absorb moisture and which will not adhere to the burn areas of the foot.

Abstract: The hip abductor hinge for a hip stabilizer includes a top, middle and bottom connector with hubs and circular apertures that engage a locking device. The bottom and middle hubs have splines on the interior portion of the hubs. The locking device has splines on the exterior portion and interlock with the splines of the bottom and middle connector. The locking device also has a threaded central bore which extends from the interior portion of the locking device through the circular aperture of the top connector. A screw extends through the circular apertures and the threaded central bore. The position of the middle connector can be adjusted by rotating the screw such that the locking device disengages with the bottom circular aperture, rotating the middle connector, and then rotating the screw such that the locking device reengages with the bottom circular aperture.

Abstract: A knee and elbow orthosis has a frame comprised of an upper pair of arms and a lower pair of arms with a pivotal connection therebetween. U-shaped brackets are attached to the outer ends of the upper pair of arms and the lower pair of arms to provide for connection to the limbs of a patient adjacent the joint being treated. The pivotal connection between the upper and lower pair of arms includes stop elements for variably limiting the range of pivotal motion between the upper and lower pair of arms. A lock element operatively connected to both pair of arms can selectively lock the arms in a fixed orientation with respect to each other.

Abstract: A hand orthosis has a base member including wrist, hand, and finger portions and a cover on the base member. A cylindrical pouch is pivotally secured to the cover adjacent the hand portion and is normally movably positioned adjacent the finger portion. The pouch has an opening therein adapted to receive a detachable cylindrical pad. The cylindrical pad in the pouch has a securing element to secure the pouch in a pivotal position on the orthosis adjacent the finger portion in a position to accommodate the patient's thumb. A strap element is on the outside of the pouch to extend over the thumb of the patient wearing the orthosis to retain the thumb of the patient whose hand and fingers are supported on the hand and finger portions of the orthosis.

Abstract: A hand orthosis has a base member supporting the palm and fingers of a patient. The base member has a cover which extends at least over the finger support area. A plurality of spaced parallel forwardly extending finger separators extend outwardly from said cover to form a plurality of finger channels therebetween. A flexible strap is secured to the base member and extends laterally across the separators and the channels. The cover and the separators are composed of a washable perspiration absorbing material.

Abstract: A conventional foot orthosis has a stiff L-shaped splint including a substantially horizontal foot portion with a lower surface. A fabric anklet is on the foot orthosis and has a bottom surface extending over the bottom surface of the splint. An attachment screw is rotatably mounted on the foot portion of the splint and has an enlarged diameter head extending downwardly through an opening in the bottom surface of the anklet. An elongated toe plate has an aperture therein which communicates with a forwardly extending elongated slot. A planar sole plate is rigidly secured to a lower surface of the toe plate and has an aperture therein communicating with a rearwardly extending elongated slot. The apertures are adapted to register with each other to permit the head of the attachment screw to extend through the apertures.

Abstract: A therapeutic device for correcting ankle contractures affecting the angle between the leg and foot including a generally L-shaped two-piece frame having a leg portion and a foot rest portion pivotally connected to the leg portion; and adjustable length ankle strap mounted on the frame for securing the frame to the ankle; a pair of adjustable length tension adjusting straps which are operatively mounted between the leg portion and the foot portion for putting steady yet releasable pressure for decreasing the angle between the leg portion and foot portion such that tension is applied to the ankle and the foot is drawn closer to the leg. Furthermore, a laterally split anklet having right and left flaps releasably fastenable to each other and pockets which slide over the free ends of the frame portions is detachably connected thereto. The anklet wraps around parts of the foot and leg to cushion and protect them from direct contact with the frame. The anklet holds the leg and foot to the frame.
