Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for information assurance in a multiple level security (MLS) combat system. A plurality of tasks are executed, where at least one of the tasks requiring a transition from a first security level to a second security level. At least one of the tasks are executed on a cloud computing system; and a kernel is employed to prevent a leakage of data between at least two of the tasks. The cloud computing system comprises a virtualization layer and provides one or more operating systems, as well as interface access control to data. The kernel provides a mechanism for the transition from the first security level to the second security level. The kernel optionally tags one or more data records with a security classification to allow one or more classification levels to be segregated for role-based data access.

Abstract: A system, method, and article of manufacture are disclosed that comprise receiving, from one or more client terminals, two or more purchase requests, wherein each of the purchase requests identifies a wager for one or more multi-player games. A wager result is then determined for each wager at the time of purchase and stored in a database. Once all the wagers for an instance of a game are received, an outcome, such as a set of cards, is determined for each player and, if appropriate, the house (the host of the game). The outcome for each player is based on the previously determined wager result(s) and the type of game played. The outcome(s) are then stored with the wager(s) and wager result(s) in a transaction history file corresponding to each of the game's patrons (players) and in a game status file.

Abstract: A distributed sensor network is provided that comprises an existing electrical system infrastructure having a plurality of nodes and providing a source of power; and a plurality of sensors. Each sensor is associated with one of the nodes in the infrastructure. In addition, each sensor obtains power from the source of power and generates sensor information regarding one or more sensed conditions that are independent of the existing electrical system infrastructure. Among other alternatives, existing electrical system infrastructure can also be used to provide a communication connection between each of the plurality of nodes and at least one central node.

Abstract: A probability of winning at least one of a plurality of prizes for a contest is dynamically adjusted, given a fixed prize inventory and an a priori unknown number of participants. A variable probability is determined by approximately dividing a current number of participants in the contest by a current number of prizes awarded. The variable probability is dynamically adjusted based on a variable probability multiplier, that is obtained by dividing a current number of winners in a predefined time interval by a remaining number of prizes in the predefined time interval. A prize can be awarded based on the adjusted variable probability.

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for tracking customer purchases using a unique anonymous identifier. Customer purchases are monitored by obtaining a unique anonymous identifier from the customer as part of a current transaction; and associating the current transaction with a prior transaction using the unique anonymous identifier. The unique anonymous identifier can be, for example, a purchase identifier associated with the prior transaction, and provides a link among a plurality of transactions associated with the customer. The current or prior transaction (or both) can optionally be clustered with one or more transactions associated with registered users having known demographics to obtain demographic information for at least one of the current and prior transactions.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for evaluating tread depth on at least one tire. One or more laser scanners are positioned at an offset position from a tire path of the at least one tire. A profile of the at least one tire is obtained and the tread depth is determined from the profile. Additional information, such as identifying information and mileage information, can optionally be obtained from the at least one tire.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for tracking customer transactions using a Unique Loyalty Code. One or more transactions of a user are monitored by providing a unique loyalty code with a sale of a product, wherein the unique loyalty code uniquely identifies each individual instance of the product. The unique loyalty code is then received from the user as part of a product registration process, wherein the product registration process does not require personal information of the user. The unique loyalty code is recorded in an account anonymously associated with the user. The disclosed unique loyalty codes can be used to monitor the recycling of products.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for notifying individuals of the arrival and/or departure of public transportation vehicles. According to one aspect of the invention, one or more persons are notified regarding the location of a transportation vehicle. A subscription request is received from the one or more persons to receive a notification about the location of the transportation vehicle. The transportation vehicle is monitored to determine if one or more predefined notification events occur and a notification is sent if the predefined notification events occur. The predefined notification events comprise a predefined distance or time of the transportation vehicle from a predefined location. The subscription service is optionally fee-based.

Abstract: Methods and apparatus are provided for protecting users from objectionable text. Users are protected from objectionable text, by obtaining a predefined acceptable word list containing a plurality of acceptable words; receiving a textual entry from at least one user; and limiting the textual entry to only the acceptable words. The acceptable word list may comprise a dictionary of the acceptable words, and can be maintained by a central server or by a client associated with at least one of the users. The textual entry can be limited by only allowing the user to enter a subsequent character following entry of one or more entered characters if the subsequent character following the one or more entered characters comprises at least a portion of one of the acceptable words. The acceptable word list can optionally be updated with one or more additional acceptable words. The acceptable word list optionally comprises a context sensitive word list or one or more context sensitive rules.
