Abstract: The invention relates to method and apparatus for removing the flaps from a perforated web of paper by drawing the perforated web over an abrasively surfaced drum rotating in the same direction as the paper is traveling and at a peripheral speed about seven times greater than the speed of the web. The web is passed over the drum such that the flaps are at the leading or downstream edges of the perforations and lie between the paper and the drum. A spring-biased pressure yoke holds the perforated web against the drum surface with a predetermined amount of pressure to facilitate abrading the flaps from the web.
Abstract: An apparatus and method for slitting an endless strip of material having substantially planar surfaces by forming a pair of adjacent grooves in each surface of the material with corresponding grooves in each surface of the material being orthogonally aligned and applying a force normal to the planar surfaces of the material and between adjacent grooves and of sufficient magnitude to shear the material along a line connecting corresponding grooves. For this purpose a pair of scoring knives for each slit are mounted in relative orthogonal alignment with respect to the planar surfaces of the material with one on each side of the material. The knives form the adjacent grooves in each surface of the material.

Abstract: A headpiece for a collapsible tube is a unitary member made up of two different plastics, each plastic providing a different property for the headpiece. The headpiece is formed by extruding on top of one another a first torus like annulus of a first plastic and a second torus like annulus of a second plastic. The two plastic annuli are simultaneously molded to form the headpiece. One plastic forms, primarily, the outer portion of the headpiece and the other plastic forms, primarily, the inner portion of the headpiece. The machine for molding the plastic head includes a work table rotatably indexed from station to station at which various operations are performed. The mandrel which holds the cylindrical body, to which the head is molded, is movable from an inboard position to an outboard position so that operations can be performed relative to it. The molding operation is performed at the inboard position. The loading, extruding, capping and ejection operations are performed at the outboard position.
Abstract: A composite structure for use on a smoking product including a non-porous tipping paper coated with a heat-activatable adhesive in a selected pattern, having areas void of adhesive and microscopic openings through the tipping paper within the void areas. The method of manufacturing the composite structure includes applying a non-conductive, heat-activatable adhesive coating on the paper web in a specific pattern having void and adhesive coated areas and forming perforations in the void areas of the paper web.
Abstract: A strip laminating method in which a first web is moved into contact with an anvil surface, severed into a plurality of strips and maintained in contact with said anvil surface. A second web having a selected striped adhesive pattern is moved into contact with said anvil surface and selected strip of said first web adheres to the adhesive stripes on said second web.
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of removing oil from metal scrap, comprising the steps of introducing oil-laden scrap into a hermetically sealed chamber, evacuating said chamber, heating said scrap to vaporize the oil, and removing the vaporized oil from said chamber.
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a composite lithographic product for use in medium to long-run printing applications consisting of the steps of providing a sheet of metal of between 0.004 to 0.008 inch thick and having a lithographic quality surface, treating at least one surface of the metal sheet to accept a sensitizing coating, providing a backing sheet and laminating the backing sheet to the untreated surface of the metal sheet.
