  • Patent number: 8964981
Abstract: A method for transmitting signaling information, such as cryptographic key synchronization information, over a data path of a network, the data path having an originating end and a terminating end. The method uses in-band signaling to transmit the signaling information from the originating end of the data path to the terminating end of the data path without consuming any bandwidth of the data path. More specifically, the method includes the steps of receiving user data to be transmitted over the data path and encrypting this user data with a cryptographic key, thereby generating cipher data. The method next includes processing the cipher data such that the cipher data includes the signaling information, and mapping the cipher data including the signaling information into a traffic unit for transmission over the data path.

  • Patent number: 8964782
Abstract: Bit-transparent muxing of an input signal for transport through an optical communications network is disclosed. A stuffing ratio is based on a line rate of the input signal and a data rate of a fixed length container. A number (NFS) of fixed stuffs is computed based on the stuffing ratio. The input signal and NFS fixed stuffs are inserted into the payload of the container, and the computed number of NFS are stored in the container's overhead. In some embodiments, the container is an overclocked OTU-3 (OTU3+) frame having a line rate of 44.6 Gb/s. This enables bit-transparent mux/demux of four nominal 10 Gig signals having line rates within a range of between 7.6 Gb/s and 10.4 Gb/s, or a single nominal 40 Gig signal having a line rate within a range of between 38.8 Gb/s and 41.6 Gb/s.

  • Patent number: 8964725
Abstract: The present invention provides a terminal adaptor and service node, which cooperate to allow a POTS-based telephone terminal to initiate calls to entities having addresses only associated with a packet network. When the telephone terminal initiates a call to the communication terminal, a reference number is provided to the terminal adaptor. The terminal adaptor will initiate a packet session with the communication terminal by sending an initiation message including the reference number to the service node. The service node will use the reference number to identify the corresponding address. With the address, the service node will aid in establishing the packet session between the terminal adaptor and the communication terminal. The terminal adaptor will support a traditional analog connection with the telephone terminal, and provide the requisite interworking between the analog connection and the packet session to support a call between the communication terminal and the telephone terminal.

  • Patent number: 8954325
Abstract: The present invention allows feedback from operator workstations to be used to update databases used for providing automated information services. When an automated process fails, recorded speech of the caller is passed on to the operator for decision making. Based on the selections made by the operator in light of the speech or other interactions with the caller, a comparison is made between the speech and the selections made by the operator to arrive at information to update the databases in the information services automation system. Thus, when the operator inputs the words corresponding to the speech provided at the information services automation system, the speech may be associated with those words. The association between the speech and the words may be used to update different databases in the information services automation system.

  • Patent number: 8948186
Abstract: A method of expediting resource negotiation in a modified Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) reduces the number of messages exchanged for resource negotiation, thereby reducing the latencies involved in session setup. The method entails sending an INVITE message having a modified SIP header containing an indication that the originator's terminal seeks a fast session setup. The INVITE message further contains a list of all codecs available at the originator's terminal and how many each type of media component are required. These codecs can be provided in an order of preference. The answerer selects the codecs for the requested media types from the list of available codecs without engaging in a back-and-forth resource negotiation for the codecs. The result is that the session can be set up with fewer messages which provides quicker session setup than in the prior art.

  • Patent number: 8934343
Abstract: A method and apparatus for Ethernet data compression enables the size of Ethernet frames to be reduced. Compression and decompression of Ethernet frames occur by the Ethernet network elements, rather than by user computers or end devices that transmit data on the Ethernet network. A new EtherType value may be used to identify the type of compressed Ethernet frames and optionally the type of mechanism used to compress the payload of Ethernet frames. The new EtherType may be inserted into a newly assembled frame ahead of the original EtherType. Alternatively, the new EtherType may replace the original EtherType and a short subheader may be used to identify the original EtherType. Out-of-band network signaling by the Ethernet control plane may also be used to determine whether frames are to be compressed and decompressed over controlled Ethernet links and tunnels, with or without use of the new EtherType.

  • Patent number: 8934357
Abstract: Domains (multiple collaborating service providers) create service offerings between pairs of edge nodes that interconnect with other domains in the network. The service offerings may specify the available bandwidth, quality of service, reliability, available security, price, subscriber and service contextual specific and other SLA information. When a new service is to be created, the service definition is used along with information about the available service offerings to determine a set of networks to implement the service. Information associated with the service offerings may be flooded to all other networks. Alternatively, the service offering information may be provided to a trusted third party (SLA broker) which may provide SLA services on the network to select sets of domains to implement inter-domain services, and may also proxy to set up the service for the SLA requesting party.

Abstract: An architecture which permits externalized management of services includes a number of management service capability (MSC) definitions. Each operator may associate a management service capability with a Service/Service Capability for managing various aspects of the Service/Service Capability. An interface enables a variety of different management systems to utilize a common MSC structure, independent of the information models, transport mechanisms and management interface of the system using the MSC. With such an arrangement, management related integration costs associated with integrating and bundling complex multi-media services is significantly reduced.

  • Patent number: 8929528
Abstract: In order to enhance collaborations, the system responds to a trigger event to determine the nature of any collaboration which should be assembled in response to the trigger, and determines the requirements needed to respond to the event. These requirements set out the type of resources (personnel, equipment, information systems, etc) that are needed. The system then identifies a subset of specific resources based on a criteria, and invites the specified resources to collaborate to respond to the event. The criteria can include the availability of the specific resource. According to an embodiment, the system evaluates responses from the invited resources and then convenes the collaboration, for example by establishing one or more communication sessions. According to an embodiment, the system evaluates responses from the invited resources to ensure that the requirements are satisfied, and if not, determines other resources to invite.

  • Patent number: 8929533
Abstract: A peer to peer contact center is provided by individual user terminals registering with a server which acts as a proxy to receive contacts from callers to the contact center. The server redirects the calls to individual terminals according to simple rules without subjecting the calls to any contact center treatment. The individual terminal receiving a call subjects the call to a contact center treatment while holding the call, and then determines from among the registered terminals the most suitable terminal for handling the call. The call is then transferred to the selected terminal. In this way the complex infrastructure of traditional contact centers is dispensed with and each individual terminal acts as a mini contact centre in respect of the calls distributed to it in a dumb or semi-dumb fashion by the server.
