Patent number: 4200850Abstract: A combination VHF and UHF tuner is provided in which a common station selector shaft may be rotated a number of revolutions to cover the seventy stations in the UHF band. The common selector shaft is provided with twenty-four detent positions per revolution and in alternate positions of the shaft the twelve VHF stations in the VHF band are received. As the common selector shaft is rotated through several revolutions the VHF stations are repeatedly received but are interspersed with different individual stations in the UHF band. Accordingly, no matter what UHF station is being received, all of the VHF stations are always within one turn of the common selector shaft. In many mixed UHF-VHF reception areas a single turn of the common selector shaft is sufficient to select all of the UHF stations as well as all of the VHF stations which are broadcasting in that area.Type: GrantFiled: December 20, 1978Date of Patent: April 29, 1980Assignee: Sarkes Tarzian, Inc.Inventor: Alarico A. Patent number: 4011401Abstract: An area-imaging device is scanned by digital logic in an arbitrary manner which dissects and reassembles the scanned image in an arbitrary way, shifting and rearranging the image segments which comprise the image in accordance with a pre-arranged scheme. The area-imaging device preferably includes a two-dimensional array of light-sensing elements upon which an image is projected using conventional optics. Each light-sensing element in the array is individually addressable using a digital x-y-coordinate addressing scheme. Digital logic circuitry generates an arbitrarily complex scanning pattern comprising pairs of x- and y-coordinate values, and these coordinate values are supplied sequentially to the area-imaging device. The video information retrieved from the individual device elements in response to this scanning pattern is assembled time-wise into a video signal suitable for display upon the face of a conventional television display device that is scanned in a conventional way.Type: GrantFiled: April 25, 1975Date of Patent: March 8, 1977Assignee: Sarkes Tarzian, Inc.Inventor: Biagio Presti

Patent number: 3989888Abstract: A digital soft edge transition system for use in conjunction with a video special effects generator utilizes digital circuitry responsive to a transition signal for switching either a first video input signal or a second video input signal into a composite video output signal. An analog video switch controlled by an analog ramp generator is utilized to provide a gradual transition between the video input signals. The gradient of the transition is determined by the time constant of the charging circuit in the ramp generator which is controlled by a digital border size control circuit. The digital border size control circuit includes circuitry responsive to the distance between the border and the edge of the viewing screen for gradually reducing the width of the border as the transition approaches the edge of the screen to prevent the abrupt disappearance of the border that usually occurs in digital soft edge generators when the transition approaches the edge of the screen.Type: GrantFiled: August 14, 1975Date of Patent: November 2, 1976Assignee: Sarkes Tarzian, Inc.Inventors: Albert E. Patent number: RE29600Abstract: A special effects generator for use in video switching produces a wide variety of rotational wipes, fades, and special effects. The generator functions by mixing together controlled amounts of horizontal and vertical sawtooth waveforms and DC potentials. The resultant signal is then fed into a comparator, and the comparator output is used to control one or more electronic video switches. The special effects are controlled by varying the strengths of the waveforms which are summed through the use of potentiometers or variable resistors. Rotational special effects are achieved through the use of a 360 degree circular potentiometer having multiple taps. Provision is made for multiple image special effects. Also disclosed are circuits for preserving the integrity of the switch output signal during synchronizing intervals and for equalizing the DC levels of all the video signals which are mixed together.Type: GrantFiled: May 19, 1976Date of Patent: March 28, 1978Assignee: Sarkes Tarzian, Inc.Inventor: Nikola B.
