  • Patent number: 5832770
Abstract: A process for further treating a closure end made of sheet material is provided, particularly for beverage cans, in which an annular fringe region is radially coupled between the central panel portion and a radius of curvature coupled to a core groove with an inner leg. The central panel portion is squeezed such that material is displaced (flows) from the fringe region in a substantially radial outward direction towards the radius of curvature. The squeezing is accomplished by a coining tool having a coining surface operable to contact the closure end. The closure surface is pressed against the closure end causing the thickness of the sheet material of the closure end to be reduced in the annular fringe region. The reduction in thickness gradually decreasing in the direction of the radius of curvature. The material displaced by the squeezing flowing towards the radius of curvature.

  • Patent number: 5768767
Abstract: A handle applicator for applying a handle having an attachment ring onto a neck of a container by expanding the ring as the ring is being applied. The applicator includes a plurality of circumferentially positioned arms each having a distal end. The arms are moveable between a radially outward first position and a radially inward second position. In the second position, the arms generally define a diameter over which the ring can be positioned onto the arms. The arms also each include a ramp surface and these surfaces cooperate to define a frusto-conical shape when the arms are in the first position. The applicator also includes a plurality of fingers that are generally located radially outward from the arms and which are being biased such that arm contacting portions of the fingers contact the arms. The fingers are movable toward and away from the distal ends of the arms so that the arm contacting portions will engage and push a ring located on the arms up the ramp surfaces.

  • Patent number: 5662245
Abstract: An integrally molded plastic container including a container body and a closure. The closure includes an orifice cap and sealing cap. The orifice cap is flexibly hinged to the neck portion adjacent to the container opening for pivoting movement from an open position to a closed position where the orifice cap closes the opening. The sealing cap is also flexibly hinged to the neck portion adjacent to the opening for pivoting movement relative to the orifice cap between a closed position where the sealing cap is in sealing relation with an orifice in the orifice cap and an open position where the sealing cap is out of sealing relation with the orifice.

  • Patent number: 5359895
Abstract: A process and an apparatus for the ultrasonic testing of welds between plastic packaging like food trays and cover foils. The welded joint between the tray and cover foil is periodically exposed to pulses of ultrasonic radiation. The pulses pass through the weld and are picked up or received by a receiver. The amplitude of the received pulses is evaluated. The cross-section of the beam of ultrasonic radiation is so small that the radiation only passes through the weld itself. The packages and the ultrasonic tester are moved relative to each other in order to examine the whole circuit of the weld. The pulse rate is such that the weld areas covered by successive pulses overlap.

  • Patent number: 5080853
Abstract: The deep-drawing of plastic foils for producing receptacles uses a drawing punch intermittently movable into a drawing mold and several expansion elements (jaws) radially movable on the drawing punch. The movement of the jaws and the punch is mutually effected to discontinuously move the drawing punch during its inward movement and to stop it for a respective predetermined dwell time. This can be combined with a continuous or discontinuous movement of the expansion jaw elements.

  • Patent number: 5022551
Abstract: A package has a vessel formed with a rim and at least one rib together forming an upwardly open compartment having a periphery and an upwardly open pocket separated by the rim from the compartment and also having a periphery. This pocket is separated at a connecting location from the compartment by the rib. A foil covering the compartment and pocket engages the rim and web all around the compartment and all around the pocket and is formed with an endless weakened tear line running along and within the periphery of the compartment except at the location, along and within the periphery of the pocket except at the location, and over the rib at the location. This foil is subdivided by the rib into a tearout tab overlying the pocket and a tearout section overlying the compartment and the web has a full thickness web extending over the rib and interconnecting the tab and section.
