  • Patent number: 8308003
Abstract: A seal for a container for comestibles, especially potable liquids, and in particular for use for sealing polyester containers such as bottles, which is suitable for passage through a PET recycling process, comprises a metal foil layer, a foam layer and a plastics film layer as well as a heat sealable layer below the foil. The foam is selected for its density and thickness so is to confer upon the seal a high buoyancy. The adhesion a between the foam and the foil is increased compared to currently available products, in order to prevent de-lamination between the foil and the foam during the recycling process.

  • Publication number: 20120043330
Abstract: A method is provided for producing a primary laminate including a tabstock in which a seal laminate including a foil layer and a top foam layer, a tabstock and a plastic film stock are fed to a laminating station. At the lamination station, a curtain of polymeric adhesive is extruded between the plastics film stock and the top face of the primary substrate, which is partly comprised of the top face of the tabstock and partly comprised of the top foam layer of the seal laminate. Use of primary laminates obtained by such a process to form seals for sealing a container, for food or drink stored at low temperatures, is also described.

  • Patent number: 8057896
Abstract: A seal and method of manufacture is provided for sealing containers such as bottles, jars and the like. The seal (i.e., closure) is formed with a lower sheet-like structure having a non-foam, heat-distributing layer thereon. The lower structure includes a foil support layer and has a polymer layer, such as a PET layer disposed on its bottom surface. A heat-activated sealant layer is provided under the bottom surface of the PET layer to bond the seal to a container opening. The non-foam, heat-distributing layer is preferably a polyolefin film. Seals in accordance with preferred embodiments of the invention also include a top portion, which is only partially bonded (directly or indirectly) to the bottom portion, so as to leave a tab portion extending from the seal. The top portion is advantageously bonded from periphery to periphery of the bottom portion and at or slightly offset from the diameter (middle) of the bottom portion.

  • Patent number: 5915577
Abstract: A seal system is provided for a container that includes a cap. The system provides a seal between the inside surface of the cap and the rim of the container as well as an exposed foil seal on the rim of the container. Removal of the cap from the container results in a cleavage of the seal system between the foil layer that is heat sealed to the rim and the backing structure leaving an exposed upper foil surface and the backing structure which remains attached to the inside surface of the cap. After the foil seal is removed by the consumer, the backing structure disposed on the inside surface of the cap provides a gasket-type seal between the cap and the rim of the container.

  • Patent number: 5871112
Abstract: An innerseal is provided for sealing against the lip of a container opening under a cap. The innerseal includes a resiliently-compressible porous synthetic backing layer which fits within the cap, a foil layer, and a wax layer which initially holds the foil and backing layers together. Preferably, a heat-activatable adhesive layer is disposed against the foil layer. The cap is tightened so that the foil layer is pressed against the lip of the container opening. Then, heat is applied to melt the wax and to activate the adhesive layer. This molten wax is absorbed into the synthetic backing layer so that the backing layer and foil layer are separatable by a twisting of the cap. The synthetic backing layer provides improved strength and liquid resistance characteristics over pulpboard type seals, and is cuttable with less dust.

  • Patent number: 5860544
Abstract: A tamper-evident heat induction liner for sealing a container includes at least four stacked layers and exhibits improved resistance to moisture migration. A heat seal polymer layer is provided for induction bonding against a container opening. A moisture-impermeable foil layer is secured against the polymer layer opposite the container opening. Tear-resistant backing layer is provided, and is secured to a low cohesive strength layer which is disposed between the backing layer and the foil layer. The low cohesive layer splits when the backing layer is lifted, leaving the foil layer and polymer layer with a portion of the split low cohesive strength layer covering the container opening in a tamper-evident, rupturable manner.
