  • Patent number: 5579975
Abstract: A fastener driving tool capable of locating a preformed hole in a first workpiece, aligning the drive track of the tool with the hole, and thereafter driving a fastener, such as a nail, through the hole and into a second workpiece to attach the first workpiece to the second workpiece. The tool has a magazine comprising an outer portion affixed to the tool and its drive track containing guide body, and an inner portion containing a strip of nails and pivoted at its rearward end to the rearward end of the outer magazine portion. The inner magazine portion is pivotable within the outer magazine portion between a first position wherein the forwardmost nail of the strip extends well beyond the nose of the guide body serving as a probe to locate and enter the workpiece hole, and a second position wherein the forwardmost nail of the strip is still engaged in the workpiece hole and is properly aligned in the drive track to be driven by the tool driver through the first workpiece hole and into the second workpiece.

  • Patent number: 4986164
Abstract: A pneumatic gun having an improved firing valve is disclosed wherein the firing valve is sealingly secured to the housing of the gun by a pair of rolling diaphragm seals. On the underside of the firing valve, there is a deflector having a downwardly curled outer edge operative to direct air flow into the top of the cylinder upon opening of the firing valve. The firing valve is so configured that exposure of multiple differential areas of the valve to a common high pressure results in the valve being biased toward a sealed position relative to the cylinder of the gun while in the unfired position.

  • Patent number: 4863089
Abstract: Improvements in the guide body and nail feed mechanism of a nail driving tool, using wire collated nails, to eliminate the formation of loose pieces of collating wire and the trapping thereof under the heads of driven nails to form flags. The tool has a driver, a magazine containing a coil of nails joined together in spaced relationship by collating wires welded to each nail, a guide body providing a drive track for the driver and the nails, and a feed pawl which advances and retracts in guideways in the guide body and has fingers engaging nails of the coil to locate the forwardmost nail thereof in the drive track. As the forwardmost nail of the coil is driven into a workpiece the collating wires break near the forwardmost nail leaving forwardly extending wire segments on the next succeeding nail. The drive track is provided with windows positioned to receive the wire segments of the forwardmost nail and bend them upwardly along the nail shank as the nail is driven.

  • Patent number: 4784306
Abstract: High-load fastener packs and magazine assemblies for otherwise conventional fastener driving tools to greatly increase the magazine capacity. Each fastener pack contains a plurality of fasteners arranged in strips. The magazine is provided on one side with an opening for communication with the fastener pack. The fastener pack is readily attachable to and detachable from the magazine. A spring device within the fastener pack urges the fastener strip nearest the magazine into the guiding channel of the magazine when the adjacent portion of the magazine channel is free of fasteners. A substantially conventional pusher element on the magazine urges the fastener strips forwardly and the forwardmost fastener into the drive track of the tool guide body. Alternatively, the guide body of the tool may be provided with a conventional pulling mechanism to advance the forwardmost fastener in the magazine into the drive track.

  • Patent number: 4746046
Abstract: The present invention provides a device for advancing fasteners in a magazine to a fastening tool. A plate assembly includes a base plate rigidly connected to a feed track and a pivot plate pivotally connected in a parallel orientation to the base plate. A motor is mounted to the pivot plate in such a manner that the motor shaft projects through apertures near the center of each plate. A clutch assembly is mounted to the motor shaft and engages fasteners on the feed track. As the motor shaft rotates, the clutch assembly provides a friction force for advancing fasteners along the rack as each fastener is ejected. Between fastener ejections, the clutch assembly rotates and slips about the motor shaft.

  • Patent number: 4726504
Abstract: A portable self-piercing riveting system includes a pneumatically driven driver which forces a self-piercing rivet through a workpiece. An anvil carried on a pivotal clamp is moved into operative alignment with the driver on the blind side of the workpiece to receive and set a rivet. The clamp is part of a linkage mechanism which moves the anvil into and out of operative position. When the anvil is in an operative position to receive and set a rivet, the linkage mechanism is in a locked position whereby the impactive force received by the anvil is not transmitted to an actuator for the linkage mechanism.
