Patent number: 8216660Abstract: The invention provides breathable laminated articles, preferably free from harmful halogens and plasticizers, which can be constructed and arranged to be usable for any application, such as wallcoverings, where breathability and being free from harmful halogens and/or plasticizers is advantageous. For example, the breathable laminated article can be made from a non-woven, breathable backing layer of material, the backing layer having a plurality of microprojections on a first side, coupled along the first side to a top layer, where the top layer may or may not be breathable, to form an assembly. This assembly has at least one variation formed in the level of the surface of the first side of the first layer, wherein the variation in level is formed such that the microprojections penetrate at least a portion of the top layer to form microapertures that improve the breathability of the top layer.Type: GrantFiled: May 4, 2005Date of Patent: July 10, 2012Assignee: SHAWMUT CorporationInventors: A. Publication number: 20110171864Abstract: Protective laminates are provided that include (a) a layer that is breathable and highly impermeable to chemicals to a degree that is subject to reduction upon flexing of the highly impermeable layer alone; and (b) a breathable non-textile layer attached to the highly impermeable layer, the non-textile layer mitigating the reduction in the impermeability of the highly impermeable layer if the laminate is flexed. The laminates may, for example, be attached to textiles and used in protective fabrics.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 27, 2006Publication date: July 14, 2011Applicants: SHAWMUT Corporation, E.I. du Pont Nemours and Co.Inventors: Daniel M. Publication number: 20090068412Abstract: Products and methods directed to multilayer upholstery are disclosed. Such upholsteries can be used as a furniture covering or in other covering applications. In many instances, the multilayer upholstery comprises three layers: a clear, cross-linked urethane layer, a textile layer and a polymeric layer between and coupled to the clear and textile layers. Additionally, the multilayer upholstery can contain a solid color or printed pattern. The printed pattern can be derived from a printed textile surface or a print film disposed as one of the layers. Methods for modifying the layers to yield antimicrobial properties, chemical resistance and adhesive bonding between layers are also disclosed.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 12, 2008Publication date: March 12, 2009Applicant: SHAWMUT CorporationInventors: A. Patent number: 6895811Abstract: Laminates are tested for the presence of small holes. For example, when a laminate is moving through a processing machine in a direction along a length of the laminate, a vacuum is applied to a surface of the laminate and the surface of the laminate is inspected to detect liquid that has penetrated from another surface of the laminate through small holes to the inspected surface.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2001Date of Patent: May 24, 2005Assignee: Shawmut CorporationInventors: Gregory F. Patent number: 6869900Abstract: A multi-layer protective fabric includes a thin urethane film, a flame-retardant fibrous layer, and a flame-retardant micro-porous layer. The film includes flame retardant additives, blocks a liquid chemical from passing through it, and breathes by an adsorption/de-sorption process to permit water vapor to pass through it. The fibrous layer is bonded on one surface of the film. The urethane layer is bonded on the other surface of the film.Type: GrantFiled: December 3, 2002Date of Patent: March 22, 2005Assignee: Shawmut CorporationInventors: Daniel Wyner, Robert C. Koeppel
