Abstract: A void filler device for use in staggering paper rolls during shipment includes a housing member which generally surrounds an inner core. The housing member has a top wall, a bottom wall, and side walls which are attached to the core, and is octagonally shaped. The top and bottom walls of the housing include fold lines around which the walls are folded to collapse the void filler device. The inner core member includes a plurality of flat boards made of laminated paperboard, corrugated cardboard, plastic or other like suitable material. Each of the boards has spaced notches along its length and the boards are interconnected with each other along the notches to form an open cell construction that is expandable and collapsible. The top and bottom walls can include apertures therein for ensuring that the paper rolls are properly aligned.

Abstract: A method for leveling a pallet load includes providing at least two pallets and a predetermined combination of containers and void fillers. The combination of containers and void fillers are placed upon a first pallet that has generally flat, horizontal top and bottom surfaces. The combination of containers and void fillers defines a horizontal plane upon which a second pallet, which has generally flat top and bottom surfaces, is stacked.

Abstract: A roll riser for use such as in staggering paper rolls during shipment generally includes first and second deck sheets each having inner and outer sides, a fold line along the edge of the core and a fold line along its midpoint, and are connected together by an open-celled core. The roll riser is collapsible along the fold lines for shipment to the user or for storage so as to occupy a relatively small amount of space and then expanded by the user for use. In a first embodiment, pressure sensitive tape is secured to the inner sides of the sheets and when the roll riser is in an expanded configuration, the tape adheres to the core. In a second embodiment, pressure sensitive tape is secured to the outer side of the first sheet and when the roll riser is in an expanded configuration, the tape is adhered to the outer sides of the first and second sheets. In each embodiment, the tape causes the roll riser to remain in the expanded configuration so as to prevent the roll riser from collapsing.

Abstract: An inverted V-shaped bulkhead void filler for filling empty spaces in a cargo area during shipping includes a novel non-pivotable, but disengagable, interlocking structure. The bulkhead void filler includes first and second rigid panels of a sandwich-type construction attached by the interlocking structure at an upper end of each of the panels. To form the novel non-pivotable, but disengagable, interlocking structure, the second panel includes a side clip and end clips attached to its upper end. The clips define a gap substantially equal to the width or thickness of a leg of the core. The leg of the core of the first panel is slid into the gap and held securely therein.

Abstract: A collapsible and expandable void filler for separating cargo during transit in trucks, railroad cars, airplanes and the like includes an outer tubular housing having a diamond-shaped tubular core. The housing and core are collapsible into a generally flat configuration along score indentations. In one embodiment, the void filler is held in an expanded configuration by a plurality of collapsible wall portions along the outer housing that collapse inwardly from the periphery of the housing and engage the core. In other embodiments, the void filler is held in an expanded configuration by a cord or elastomeric bands which are tightly stretched around the periphery of the housing and is held in a series of aligned notches.

The solid fibreboard laminate has end flaps extending beyond the end of the corrugated which in packaging systems may be grasped for lifting of packaged articles and loads from the top or may be folded over on themselves forming an end section receivable in slots in the corner of a tray forming an integrated packaging system.

Abstract: A cargo air bag inflation valve and inflator combination comprising a tubular plastic valve body having a central passageway for the flow of compressed air to permit the inflating of an air bag. Valve closure means is reciprocal in the passageway and is biased to a normal valve closed position. A quick connect/disconnect fitting carries detent balls operative to engage a circumferential edge on the valve body and to snap onto a detent ball receiving surface of diameter less than the circumferential edge to thereby draw the valve body into the fitting. An annular shoulder in the fitting engages the valve plug separating the valve seat carried by the valve body from the valve plug permitting inflation of the air bag through the fitting and central passageway.

Abstract: An inflation nozzle for inflating cargo air bags having a main body through which compressed air flows to an outlet in a nozzle tip and a handle pivoted to the main body carrying at its end adjacent the nozzle tip a spring-loaded closure for closing off the outlet when the inflation nozzle is out of engagement with the cargo air bag valve. The body and handle are spring loaded whereby the handle can be squeezed and slid into engagement with the air bag valve; and, on release, the nozzle tip protrudes into the air valve opening it and completing locking of the nozzle to the valve.

Abstract: A rigid, lightweight, splinter-free packaging frame for shipping pallet loads of goods having four marginal side members having a width and length corresponding generally to the width and length of the pallet load upon which it is to be used, the side members comprising a core of corrugated board folded upon itself and having a length of solid fiber laminated linerboard laminated to the opposed outer planar faces of the corrugated board. The linerboard extends beyond one end of each of the side members and receives the opposite end of an adjoining side member and is adhered thereto to form a rigid right angle frame.

The disk with annular preformed angle therein are receivable in the core of the coil of material providing protection to the coil about its entire circumference.

Abstract: A valve for a bulk container containing fluid or semi-fluid material permitting draining of the container by gravity including a valve body with a throughopening therethrough, an annular flange at one end of the valve body to be sealingly secured to a plastic bag in the container containing the material and permitting flow of the material from the bag through the throughopening of the valve, an annular recess spaced from the flange a distance generally equal to the thickness of the side wall of the container for receiving a handle securing the valve body in the container side wall, and a butterfly in the throughopening to selectively open and close the valve.

Abstract: A knockdown bulk container for storing and shipping bulk quantities of fluid and semi-fluid substances including an annular base, an annular cap and a circular side wall. The side wall is formed of a number of paperboard slats adhered to a sheet of paperboard. The side wall is adapted to be folded into a substantially flat condition for shipping and storing and formed into a cylinder which is inserted in the annular base for filling of the container. Interlocking blocks adhered respectively to the outside of the base of the side wall and to the inside of the annular base secure the side wall in the base.

Abstract: A paperboard slat for use in a variety of packaging and structural applications wherein a plurality of sheets of paperboard are laminated to each other and folded upon itself along a fold line with the facing sheets being adhered together. The slat is generally of extended length and has a rounded edge running along the fold line. The slat is characterized by its relatively high strength and rigidity and its substantially warp-free condition.
