Abstract: In one aspect, a method to collect performance measurements a digital cellular communication network is provided. Radio links of the active set are set up both inside the serving cell and towards one or more adjacent cells belonging to adjacent clusters controlled by respective radio network controllers. Controllers are connected to one another in order to act either as master of the active set in communication with the core network or slave for managing directly controlled radio resources and executing requests from the master devoted to radio link set up or deletion. The master radio controller, when calling a slave for requesting a specific radio link deletion from the active set, also sends to it some information about the cause of that deletion. The slave radio controller when receives the cause information increments a performance measurement counter associated to the specific cause and to the specific cell the radio link deletion is requested for.

  • Patent number: 7336659
Abstract: The method concerns multicast service delivering through the UMTS and GSM networks. For this aim is given higher priority to an opportune subset of all the real-time services with guaranteed bandwidth transmissible by the network. This subset is named IS-MBMS (Immediate Streaming-Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service). A certain amount of physical resources is reserved in all the system for the IS-MBMS services; not real-time services can be transmitted on the reserved resources when not used by the IS-MBMS ones. The reserved resources allow for transmitting the IS-MBMS services with minimum bit-rate, at least. The network announces in the service area that an IS-MBMS content becomes available; in reply one or more subscribed users transmit a request for joining a multicast group for that service. The network transmits a notification message on a multicast channel to give to the joined users useful information of how get the announced service, i.e.: Service-Id, RB parameters, etc.

  • Patent number: 7333441
Abstract: It is disclosed a method to control the traffic generated by packet switched services in digital cellular communication networks. The method, enabled by the operator or by radio resource manager request, exploits network controlled cell reselection procedure and is based on the evaluation of the level of occupation of radio resources and, for every GPRS mobile, on the evaluation of the signal strength received both from the serving cell and from the cells adjacent to the serving one. Suitable cells towards which to move the GPRS mobiles are searched by the procedure. GPRS mobiles are then moved towards a candidate target cell through network controlled cell reselection if the cell supports packet switched service and has an occupation level of radio resources lower than a threshold parameter set by the operator on a cell basis.

  • Patent number: 7308281
Abstract: In radio transmission systems with point-to-point and point-to-multipoint topology a master station and one or several terminal stations are defined as well as a downstream channel from the master station to the terminal stations and an upstream channel from the terminal stations to the master station. In such systems, in order to send traffic to several terminal stations, the downstream channel is used by the master station in time division multiplexing. In some cases, the modulation type and the forward error correction, jointly called phy mode, depend on the addressed terminal. These systems are called adaptive phy mode systems. The present invention relates to adaptive phy mode systems, and it defines a power control technique for the terminal stations that also commands the phy mode switching and optimizes the system in terms of coverage, capacity and interference.

  • Patent number: 7224977
Abstract: A Common radio resource management method is performed in a mobile radio communication network employing different radio access technologies that overlap over a geographic area subdivided into cells belonging to the domains of respective controllers which are connected to each other in overlapping or adjacent domains and to a core network by means of relevant interfaces. The controllers calculate new traffic-related Information Elements to be exchanged over the existing interfaces to the aim of planning handovers and/or cell reselections towards adjacent cells either of the same or different RAT. Cell capabilities and mobile terminal capabilitiess being also specified by respective IEs. Diversely from the conventional traffic-related IEs based on Cell Load parameters or Free Capacity, the new IEs include indications of the “availability” of bearer services in the cell in terms of maximum bitrate, either guaranteed or not guaranteed, that can currently be allowed to each bearer service.

  • Patent number: 7206604
Abstract: A station controller (M-BSC) is connected to base transceiver stations BTS of the GSM (Global System for Mobile), or DCS (Digital Cellular System) mobile transceiver system, and to BTSC base transceiver stations of the TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) system through code division transceiver access technology, typical of 3G systems, and TDD duplexing. The controller is connected to a MSC circuit switch of GSM type. The new 3G technology shares the GSM core network, which on the contrary ignores the existence of the latter. Transparency of the 3G new technology towards the core network is achieved inhibiting any handover from GSM cells to BTSC cells and enabling the external handover (through MSC intervention) from BTSC cells to GSM cells after appropriate treatment of information to be sent to MSC.

  • Publication number: 20060165019
Abstract: An efficient reduction for the time delay during echo correction in a telecommunications network is made possible by a method for reducing an echo in uplink data (19 to 22) that are issued from a terminal (2, 3) of a telecommunications network (6, 8). A copy (25) of downlink data is created from downlink data (13) that are to be transmitted from the telecommunications network (6, 8) toward the terminal (3). Said copy (25) of downlink data is converted (transcoder 18) and used for the reduction (10) of echo in uplink data (21), whereas downlink data (13) are transmitted (6) toward the terminal (2, 3).

  • Publication number: 20040233866
Abstract: A method of non-real time software download in an IP-based mobile communication system with heterogeneous access technologies is based on the session initiation protocol (SIP). For download recovery in case of handover between a first and a second access networks using different access technologies while a software download session is ongoing, the SIP user agent associated with a handovering terminal, upon detecting the handover, sends, without releasing the ongoing session, a transfer request message to a SIP proxy server that has set up and is currently managing the download session, and that server can start operations necessary in order a new session is set up with the user agent in the new location, under the control of a proxy server entrusted with managing the new session, and download is resumed from said last received packet.

  • Patent number: 6813263
Abstract: It is described a discrimination procedure of a wanted signal from a plurality of cochannel interferents received by array antennas of GSM or DCS base transceiver stations. The procedure includes a phase for the estimate of the number and arrival directions of the interferents, and of the wanted signal, followed by a spatial filtering phase in which the signals transduced by the sensors of the array are linearly combined among them through multiplication coefficients, or weights, organized in a vector w satisfying the two following in conditions: A) Spatial filtering constrains the gain of the array in the ratio between wanted signal and noise, compared to the traditional use of a single sensor, so that the gain is not less than a properly selected threshold; B) it minimizes the ratio between the sum of interferents' powers and wanted signal power.

  • Patent number: 6738611
Abstract: It is described an image rejection, sub-harmonic frequency converter, realized in microstrip, particularly adapted to be used in mobile communication equipment, The converter avails of two identical sub-harmonic mixers employing each one or two pairs of diodes in antiparallel, obtained on a same silica substrate, and of a structure of hybrids performing appropriate phase combination adapted to suppress the image band in the converted signal. The mixers include filtering structures preferably consisting, but no limited to the same, of stubs &lgr;/4 long, at the local oscillator frequency, having a free end, in short or open circuit, respectively. According to an alternative embodiment, said stubs are replaced by appropriate filters implemented with concentrated structures (L and C) performing the same transfer function of the stubs in microstrip.

  • Patent number: 6608873
Abstract: Demodulation of CPM-modulated information symbols which are demodulated after being transmitted through an AWGN channel, using only partial whitened matched filtering, whereby finite pulses are produced which, however, are still accompanied by interferences in the form of remaining colored noise which can be approximately converted into white noise by a successive additional whitening filter so that the noise power will be minimized. For correcting the accompanying symbol interferences, a sequence estimation with reduced number of states follows.

  • Patent number: 6597247
Abstract: Is disclosed a method and a relative circuit adapted to transfer to a microwave transmission carrier the angle modulation of an intermediate frequency signal. The conveyor of angle modulation is a PLL (100) which VCO (2) generates the microwave carrier (RF) modulated like the intermediate frequency signal (S4), taken as reference for the phase comparator (10) of the PLL. The comparator receives moreover a copy of the signal generated by the VCO, converted at intermediate frequency (S3) by means of a subharmonic mixer, and it generates an error signal (S5). The PLL comprises further a regulator circuit (101) which maintains automatically constant relation K between the locked band of the PLL and the bandwidth of the reference signal (S4), the lanter being a signal susceptible of band width variations, generally due to the choice of different transmission speeds.

  • Patent number: 6549536
Abstract: It is disclosed an algorithm able to compress a defined set of addresses S, the set of addresses to be compressed, belonging to the set U, the whole addressing space; for each of these addresses the algorithm must identify one and only one address belonging to C, the set of compressed address (i.e. perform a transformation S→C). The algorithm may be implemented using some low-cost random access memories (RAM) and some control logic. A performance comparison shows that is possible to perform the address compression using one order of magnitude less memory respect to the state-of-the-art techniques. Basically, the method of the invention combines the splitting of the incoming address space (U) into a plurality of sub-spaces, a tree search algorithm for clustering a defined set (S) of identifiers contained in the sub-spaces into which the incoming addresses space (U) has been split and a sequential search performed within the right cluster in order to identify the compressed address belonging to space C.
