Publication number: 20040229660Abstract: Methods of and apparatuses for varying and controlling the effective series resistance (ESR) of a power supply rail configured to transmit power from a power supply of a host device to a wireless network interface device (e.g. a wireless modem). Varying and controlling the ESR of the power supply rail, relative to an ESR of a super capacitor coupled to the power supply rail, allows control of the currents drawn from the host power supply and a super capacitor. During a time when the wireless network interface device is transmitting or is about to transmit, the ESR of the power supply rail is increased so that it exceeds the ESR of the super capacitor, thereby causing current for the power amplifier (PA) of the wireless network interface device to be drawn primarily from the super capacitor, rather than from the host power supply.Type: ApplicationFiled: May 16, 2003Publication date: November 18, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventors: Ping Liu, Bruce Miller, Rachel Wong

Publication number: 20040204091Abstract: Methods of and apparatuses for characterizing the power supplying capabilities of host power supplies providing power to wireless modems. According to an exemplary method, an equivalent series resistance of the power supply is determined and compared to a plurality of maximum equivalent series resistance values associated with a corresponding plurality of transmission power classes. Each power class is designated as a permissible power class at which the wireless modem may be configured to transmit, for each maximum equivalent series resistance value that is greater than the equivalent series resistance of the power supply.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 16, 2002Publication date: October 14, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventors: Ping Liu, Behrouz Pourseyed, Trong Hoang

Publication number: 20040153527Abstract: A data communications network may be browsed using one or more tokens by receiving an input keyword string from a user, determining whether there is a match between the input keyword string and a database of keyword strings, determining a category of the keyword string, rendering to the user at least one service identifier associated with the category, receiving a user-selected service identifier in response to the rendering, substituting at least one variable in a resource locator template associated with the service with a string based at least in part on the keyword string entered by the user and launching the resource locator. According to one aspect, a special rendering of a hyperlink corresponding to the resource locator is used to indicate private data will be disclosed upon launching the resource locator.Type: ApplicationFiled: January 31, 2003Publication date: August 5, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventor: Joseph P.R. Publication number: 20040100748Abstract: Method of and apparatus for preventing current overdraw by a wireless modem sinking current from a host power supply of a host device (e.g. laptop computer or PDA). The methods and apparatuses are particularly applicable, but not limited to PCMCIA wireless modems and GSM/GPRS wireless networks.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 27, 2002Publication date: May 27, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless., Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventors: Ping Liu, Bruce Miller, Golnaz Sanaie-fard

Publication number: 20040090802Abstract: A method and apparatus for suppressing noise caused by the switching of a switching power supply. The method and apparatus use frequency dithering techniques to distribute the switching noise and its spurious products over a wider bandwidth, thereby reducing the average peak power per given range of bandwidth. The frequency dithering techniques are particularly applicable to mobile radio applications, where switching noise from switching power supplies can modulate the transmit carrier and its harmonics, sub-harmonics and intermediate frequency products.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 1, 2002Publication date: May 13, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventors: Behrouz Pourseyed, Trong Hoang

Publication number: 20040083271Abstract: Redirecting a notification to a wireless user device includes registering for notification of incoming messages for an account on a message server, the incoming messages being directed to an account on the message server. The redirecting also includes receiving at least one notification and redirecting the at least one notification through a firewall to a wireless user device associated with the account. The remote message server is in communication with a network protected by the firewall. According to one aspect, a cradle is configured to perform the redirection. According to another aspect, the cradle is associated with a remote desktop computer in communication with the network.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 25, 2002Publication date: April 29, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventor: Joseph Peter Robert Tosey

Publication number: 20040080215Abstract: A switching circuit operative to switch between a first and second power source to an output is disclosed. The circuit comprises a MOSFET switch electrically connected to the first and second power sources and operative to provide power from either one of the power sources to the output. The circuit includes a RC network electrically connected to a gate of the MOSFET switch. The RC network is operative to delay switching between the first and second power sources such that the second power source has the opportunity to fully ramp-up in order to provide continuous power to the output. Accordingly, the second power source can fully provide power to the output when the power is switched from the first power source to the second power source.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 23, 2002Publication date: April 29, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventors: Samir Hadzimusic, Simon Au

Publication number: 20040066418Abstract: The present invention utilizes input handling to provide enter-then-act capability for user inputs. User inputs are received, and a set of one or more secondary applications are executed using the input. A priority rating may then be calculated for each of the one or more secondary applications in the set, the priority rating indicating how pertinent the input was to a corresponding application.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 7, 2002Publication date: April 8, 2004Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc. a Canadian CorporationInventor: Joseph Peter Robert Tosey

Publication number: 20030081579Abstract: A network data device that receives data from an interconnected network is contemplated. The device has a processing circuitry, a data network connection circuitry for receiving data from the interconnected network, and a wireless messaging circuitry. The wireless messaging circuitry is communicatively coupled to the data network connection circuitry and the processing circuitry, and is responsive to a wireless signal. The data network connection circuitry is responsive to receive data from the interconnected network based upon an indication from the wireless messaging circuitry.Type: ApplicationFiled: July 29, 2002Publication date: May 1, 2003Applicant: Sierra Wireless, Inc., a Canadian CorporationInventors: Joseph Peter R.
