  • Patent number: 11920127
Abstract: Non-destructive methods and devices are disclosed herein for overcoming the limitations associated with analyzing shell casings and other cylindrical items for biomolecular and fingerprint extraction and analysis. In a preferred embodiment of these methodologies and devices, the open end of a spent shell casing (or like object) is plugged with a handle. This approach reduces the risk of sample contamination by gunpowder residue, while also providing a convenient means for handling the shell casing that reduces the risk of contamination or sample loss. Spin baskets (or extraction tubes) are provided which may be customized to different shell casing diameters, thereby substantially reducing the volume of extraction buffer required for sample collection and enable ease of centrifugation. A strong surfactant is preferably utilized during collection, which may reduce the amount of time needed for collection to just minutes.

  • Patent number: 11906404
Abstract: A sampling system is disclosed which comprises a collection chamber equipped with an inlet and first and second outlets; a pump which creates a flow of fluid into said inlet from the ambient environment, wherein said collection chamber divides the flow of fluid into a first major flow of fluid along which flows along a first flow path between said inlet and said first outlet, and a second minor flow of fluid which flows along a second flow path between said inlet and said second outlet; a collection surface disposed within said collection chamber and within the second flow path such that particles in the flow of fluid into said inlet impinge on said collection surface; a heater which vaporizes particles that collect on said collection surface; and an analyzer which analyzes the composition of the fluidic flow through said second outlet.

  • Patent number: 10126213
Abstract: A device (201) is provided for collecting a substance from an ambient fluid. The device includes a housing (205) equipped with an (207) inlet and an outlet (209) which are in fluidic communication with each other, and a collector (203) which has a plurality of spaced-apart layers (213). The collector is disposed in a fluidic flow path between the inlet and the outlet such that a flow of fluid passes through adjacent layers of the collector. Each of the layers includes a substrate (217) having a sorbent or adherent (219) disposed thereon, and a plurality of embossments (215) which maintains the layers in the spaced-apart configuration.

Abstract: A device (201) is provided for collecting signatures from an ambient fluid. The device includes a housing (205) equipped with an (207) inlet and an outlet (209) which are in fluidic communication with each other, and a signature collector (203) which has a plurality of spaced-apart layers (213). The signature collector is disposed in a fluidic flow path between the inlet and the outlet such that a flow of fluid passes through adjacent layers of the signature collector. Each of the layers includes a substrate (217) having a sorbent or adherent (219) disposed thereon, and a plurality of embossments (215) which maintains the layers in the spaced-apart configuration.

  • Publication number: 20130167941
Abstract: The method and device of the present invention reduces the pulsation of fluid from a pump. The damping device and method works on either the positive pressure or negative pressure side of the pump. Under positive pressure the device is attached downstream from the outlet port of a pump, the device having an input port in fluidic communication with the outlet port of the pump, an outlet port, an outer wall with an opening, and a membrane covering the opening, the outer wall of the device and the membrane forming a contained volume. As fluid from the outlet port of the pump passes into the device, it enters the contained volume which expands and contracts, thereby vitiating the pulsations in the fluid flow downstream of the device. Alternatively, under negative pressure the device is attached upstream from the inlet port of a pump.

  • Publication number: 20120109583
Abstract: In accordance with one embodiment of the present invention, a data acquisition and control system includes a sample manifold for collecting air samples. The manifold may include twenty-eight discrete sorbent tubes. Each sorbent tube may be sealed within the manifold and the manifold may be removed from the system for sorbent tube analysis. A second manifold may be connected to the system for continued air sampling collection. The system may autonomously collect multiple samples at scheduled or triggered events. The system may also communicate with other systems to form a multi-system monitoring network. The system may also interface and operate with a multitude of sensors and monitors of different types.

  • Patent number: 7096749
Abstract: A lightweight, economical, mass-producible, reusable airfoil can be deployed in an airspace while in or attached to any moving vehicle for the purpose of collecting air samples. A frame has an airfoil shape that provides pressure differentials that preferentially direct particulates and contaminants of differing size and mass to different areas of an absorbent media attached or integral to the frame. The absorbent media are readily detachable from the frame for sanitary and efficient transfer to facilities where the samples can be analyzed.
