Patent number: 7477400Abstract: A range/speed finder can be incorporated into a personal electronic device. In one example, a personal electronic device includes an automatic focus system adapted to focus an image of an object and a processor in communication with the automatic focus system adapted to detect a distance of the object using the automatic focus system. The processor can be adapted to detect a speed of the object and/or a dimension of the object using the automatic focus system. Methods and systems for determining a distance, a dimension, and/or a speed of the object relative to the personal electronic device are also provided.Type: GrantFiled: September 2, 2005Date of Patent: January 13, 2009Assignee: Siimpel CorporationInventors: Roman C. Gutierrez, Tony K. Tang

Patent number: 7403344Abstract: A lens assembly suitable for use in miniature cameras is disclosed. The lens assembly can have a plurality of glass lenses having spherical surfaces and a single plastic lens having aspheric surfaces, for example. Optionally, all of the lenses can be disposed within a common lens barrel. A pupil plane can be located just in front of the first lens to provide a small chief ray angle. Both the cost of the lens assembly and alignment sensitivity are advantageously mitigated.Type: GrantFiled: October 31, 2005Date of Patent: July 22, 2008Assignee: Siimpel CorporationInventors: Jing Xu, Roman C. Patent number: 7359131Abstract: An improved lens mount and related lens and lens barrel positioning methods are provided. In one example, a lens mount for use with a miniature camera can include a ring member having a substantially cylindrical interior surface defining a substantially cylindrical interior space. A plurality of elongate ribs are disposed on the interior surface of the ring member and are adapted to exert pressure against an external surface of a lens barrel received by the ring member. In another example, a method of positioning a lens barrel includes inserting a lens barrel into a ring member having a substantially cylindrical interior surface. Pressure can be exerted against an external surface of the lens barrel from a plurality of elongate ribs disposed on the interior surface of the ring member. The pressure can prevent rotation of the lens barrel along at least three axes of rotational freedom.Type: GrantFiled: August 28, 2006Date of Patent: April 15, 2008Assignee: Siimpel CorporationInventors: Roman C. Gutierrez, Robert J. Calvet

Patent number: 7359130Abstract: An improved lens mount and related alignment methods are provided. In one example, a lens mount includes a ring member and a base member connected with the ring member. The base member has a bottom surface. First and second coplanar mounting pads are provided on the bottom surface of the base member. In another example, a method of aligning a lens mount relative to a stage includes providing a lens mount comprising: a ring member and a base member connected with the ring member. A stage having a top surface is provided. A plurality of alignment members on a bottom surface of the base member are aligned with a corresponding plurality of apertures in the stage. The alignment members are inserted into the apertures, and first, second, and third mounting pads on the bottom surface of the base member are contacted with the top surface of the stage.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2006Date of Patent: April 15, 2008Assignee: Siimpel CorporationInventor: Robert J. Patent number: 7345827Abstract: An improved lens barrel and related methods are provided. For example, in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a lens barrel includes a housing comprising a first section having a first diameter and a second section having a second diameter. A first lens element having a diameter approximately equal to the first diameter of the first section is enclosed by the first section of the housing. A second lens element is provided having a diameter approximately equal to the second diameter of the second section.Type: GrantFiled: February 28, 2006Date of Patent: March 18, 2008Assignee: Siimpel CorporationInventors: Tony K. Tang, Roman C. Gutierrez, Robert J. Calvet, Jing Xu, Eric R. Fossum

Patent number: 7266272Abstract: A motion control stage assembly includes a payload assembly and a base assembly joined together with connecting elements. The connecting elements provide degenerate support between the base and the payload such that a desired trajectory of the payload with respect to the base is relatively unconstrained. The connecting element assemblies are substantially planar, and each includes a first connecting element with a first intermediate point, a second connecting element with a second intermediate point, and a secondary connecting element that joins the first and second connecting elements at the first and second intermediate points. The first and the second connecting elements may be formed integrally with each other, of materials including a semiconductor material, a resilient metal or a plastic, and by processes including micromachining, wire-electrical-discharge machining, or injection molding.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2005Date of Patent: September 4, 2007Assignee: Siimpel CorporationInventors: Robert J. Calvet, Roman C. Gutierrez

Patent number: 7113688Abstract: Micromachined passive alignment assemblies and methods of using and making the same are provided. The alignment assemblies are used to align at least one optical element. The alignment assemblies may be configured with kinematic, pseudo-kinematic, redundant or degenerate support structures. One alignment assembly comprises a base and a payload, which supports at least one optical element. The payload may be coupled to the base via connecting structures. The base, the payload and/or the connecting structures may have internal flexure assemblies for preloading a connection, thermal compensation and/or strain isolation.Type: GrantFiled: January 18, 2005Date of Patent: September 26, 2006Assignee: Siimpel CorporationInventors: Robert J. Calvet, Roman C. Gutierrez, Tony Kai Tang

Patent number: 6934087Abstract: A fiber optic collimator comprises an optical fiber with an angled end face, a ferrule and a plano-convex lens. An end portion of the optical fiber is inserted in the ferrule. The plano-convex lens collimates a beam of light from the optical fiber.Type: GrantFiled: September 23, 2003Date of Patent: August 23, 2005Assignee: Siimpel CorporationInventors: Roman C.
