Abstract: A process and system for preparing vegetable oilseed meal for subsequent solvent extraction of the contained vegetable oil, comprising a screwpress section and extruding/expanding section, a common worm shaft (10, 11) rotating within a perforated barrel wall section (14) and a non-perforate barrel wall section (18) connected by an annular member (16) with water injection nozzles (17) therein. Meal enters at inlet (13); oil is extracted through wall (14); the meal enters section (18) at increased temperature and moisture content; its temperature is then increased further to a level at which the increased moisture content will flash off as the meal leaves the restricted orifice (19) thus increasing the porosity and extractability of the meal.
Abstract: Apparatus for the expansion of oil bearing seeds and of the kind comprising at least one screw (11) rotatable in a barrel (10) for conveying seed through the barrel from one end to the other, there being a die plate (14) having orifices (15) therein at the output end of the barrel and through which the seed material is extruded by the action of the screw or screws, there being a plurality of throttle needles (17) having portions (19) of tapering cross-section and movable linearly with respect to said orifices thus to vary the effective cross-sectional area thereof in response to conditions within the barrel such as temperature as detected by a temperature sensor (22), the cylindrical wall of the barrel being either wholly plain or in part comprised by a plurality of circumferentially spaced axially extending bars forming a press cage, the position of the throttle needles ensuring control of the state of the seed material prior to extrusion through the die plate.
Abstract: A semi-continuous deodorizer for the deodorization of edible oils, comprising a vessel (10) divided into three zones (A,B,C), means for collecting oil to be deodorized in the first zone (A) and for receiving deodorized oil from the second zone (B), in the third zone (C), means for passing oil continuously to the first zone via a heat exchanger (15) where it is pre-heated by heat exchange with oil continuously withdrawn from the third zone, and an oil heater (18) for heating the oil to full process temperatures by circulating the oil through the oil heater and through said first zone making use of the gas lift principle with steam as the injected gas being introduced at (28) into the base of the oil heater.
Abstract: A deodorizer of the kind wherein consecutive batches of oil to be deodorized are progressed through a plurality of consecutive treatment vessels during which each batch is first heated, then subjected to the action of a stripping gas and finally cooled, all under a high degree of vacuum, each batch of oil having a period of residence in each such vessel, characterized in that means is provided whereby a batch of oil to be treated is partially heated by heat exchange with a fluid medium which is itself heated by heat exchange with a previously processed batch of oil for the purposes of cooling the latter.
Abstract: In order to extract oil from yeast powder, the yeast powder is first pelletized, the pellets are flaked, and the resulting flakes are subjected to a solvent extraction process.
