    Abstract: A microsurgical irrigation/aspiration system is provided, including a controller having a pump roller head, actuators for occluding fluid lines, a suction sensor, and means for mounting a pump cassette. The system cassette is suitable for mounting on the controller and has an opening with a pump segment passing along an arcuate wall of the opening. When the cassette is mounted on the console, the roller head is engaged in the cassette opening and compresses the pump segment against the arcuate wall. An infusion line passes through the cassette and is occludable by one of the actuators, and a vent line connected to the pump segment is occludable by a second actuator. A suction sensing port on the cassette couples with the suction sensor in the controller. In an alternate embodiment, a cassette is disclosed within which both vacuum and peristaltic pumping is possible. Latching may be accomplished by a plunger attached to the sensory port of the cassette.

    Abstract: A phacoemulsification system is provided, including an ultrasonic phacoemulsification handpiece and a handpiece driver. A handpiece simulator is provided to analyze the performance characteristics of the handpiece driver. The simulator is selectively coupled in a feedback loop with the driver so as to receive drive signals from the driver and return a feedback signal to the driver in the same manner as a handpiece. The simulator detects the frequency and voltage characteristics of the signal provided by the handpiece driver and on the basis thereof generates a feedback signal for return to the handpiece driver. The simulator can exercise the response of the driver dynamically by controllably varying the frequency of the feedback signal. The simulator may be constructed in either analog or microprocessor-based form. In the latter case, the microprocessor can determine whether the drive signals are within acceptable limits, and displays to the user the nature of unacceptable performance.

    Abstract: The inner needle in a guillotine type ocular cutter is ground and placed within the swaged outer needle in an interference fit, so that a radial force is exerted by said inner needle on said outer needle to better shear the ocular tissue. Further, a positive stop is effected on the drive shaft controlling the inner needle so that the distance from the end of the outer needle port to the tissue is minimized. Alternately, the drive shaft has a dwell exerted on it.

    Abstract: The disposable adaptor to permit aspiration and/or irrigation fluid to pass through an ultrasonic surgical instrument without permitting leakage of the fluid from or into the interior of the instrument. The adaptor includes a generally annular housing defining a lumen for receiving the horn of the ultrasonic instrument and having inner seals forming a seal between the confronting surface of the adaptor and horn for prohibiting leakage along the exterior wall of the horn and an outer seal for forming a tight seal between the confronting surface of the adaptor and the instrument shroud for prohibiting leakage along the exterior surface of the adaptor. The adaptor includes a flange at its distal end with a circumferential groove extending partially about the adaptor and cooperating with a mating projection on the distal end of the instrument shroud to provide rotational orientation for the adaptor with respect to the shroud.

    Abstract: A microsurgery system comprising an instrument including a source of vacuum and control means, a remotely connected handpiece adapted to be disposed in the vicinity of the situs of the surgery and including an inlet and suction conduit means coupled to the inlet and to the vacuum source for carrying material away from the surgery situs. The system also includes a cassette assembly arranged for releasable securement to the instrument. The control means of the instrument includes an interrupter bar which cooperates with the cassette assembly for selectively isolating the vacuum source from the suction conduit means. The cassette assembly comprises a body portion, a collection vessel, a first port communicating with the suction conduit and a second port communicating with the vacuum source. Occludable conduit means are coupled between the first and second ports and are arranged to be engaged by the interrupter bar in response to a first signal to isolate the vacuum source from the suction means.
