Patent number: 9616260Abstract: A barrier assembly comprising a horizontally deployable vapor barrier assembly with a frame with opposing side guides extending between a header and footer. A guide rod contained in each side guide extends between the header and the footer. A vapor barrier is deployable horizontally with side edge sleeve portions that slide axially over the guide rods. At least one roller is connected to each of the side guides adjacent to the guide rod, and each roller supports a portion of the vapor barrier's side edge portions. The rollers rolls on the edge portions as the sleeve portion slides axially over the guide rods as the vapor barrier moves between the deployed and stowed positions. Lifter plates are attached to each of the side guides and positioned to engage support carriages and temporarily lift the support member out of engagement with the support surface over segment joints as the vapor barrier moves between the stowed and deployed positions.Type: GrantFiled: June 24, 2015Date of Patent: April 11, 2017Assignee: Smoke Guard, Inc.Inventors: Alexander Engsan Chubb, Brendan William Lawry, Christopher Gordon Dennis Todd

Patent number: 9038693Abstract: Barrier systems and associated methods, including vapor and/or fire barrier systems, are disclosed herein. One aspect of the invention is directed toward a barrier system that includes a barrier coupled to a spool, and a drive system. The barrier is positioned to be wound onto and off of the spool as the barrier moves between a deployed position and a retracted position by the drive assembly. The system further includes a clutch configured to resist movement of the barrier system unless directed by the drive system, and to release the barrier to allow manual egress when power to the drive system fails. The system further includes a latch configured to retain the barrier in a retracted position and to prevent the barrier from deploying when power fails and the clutch releases.Type: GrantFiled: July 2, 2013Date of Patent: May 26, 2015Assignee: Smoke Guard, Inc.Inventors: Curtis Paul Gonzales, William L. Ziegert, Paul R. Walters, Jr., Ben Tolman

Patent number: 8113266Abstract: Barrier systems and associated methods, including vapor and/or fire barrier systems, are disclosed herein. One aspect of the invention is directed toward a barrier system that includes a barrier coupled to a spool. The barrier is positioned to be wound onto and off of the spool as the barrier moves between a deployed position and a retracted position by a drive assembly. The system further includes a seal assembly positioned in a housing and contacting the spool to create a barrier to smoke and vapor migration through the housing. The system still further includes a sensor operably coupled to a control system and positioned to sense barrier position as the barrier moves between the deployed and the retracted positions.Type: GrantFiled: January 14, 2009Date of Patent: February 14, 2012Assignee: Smoke Guard, Inc.Inventors: James N. Cloninger, Kelsey S. Aldrich, Curtis Gonzales

Publication number: 20110088918Abstract: The subject invention comprises a flexible multilayer fire-rated material that has at least one layer of an intumescent material. Because it is flexible, the fire-rated material is usable in situations where it is desirable for the fire-rated material to be rolled up or folded into a non-flat storage application. This allows the subject fire-rated material to be used in fire-rated and smoke-resistant barriers that are recessed in walls or ceilings until use. One end use embodiment includes without limitation, recessed or rolled up fabrics used in elevator lobby ceilings to seal off elevators or their lobbies from smoke or fire.Type: ApplicationFiled: October 19, 2010Publication date: April 21, 2011Applicant: Smoke Guard, Inc.Inventor: Curtis P. Patent number: 7299848Abstract: Closure member control systems, including door control systems for barrier housings, and associated methods are disclosed. One aspect of the invention is directed toward a closure member control system that includes a closure member positioned to cover a portion of an opening in a structure (e.g., a barrier housing). The closure member has a closed position where the closure member covers the portion of the opening and an open position where the closure member does not cover the portion of the opening. The system further includes a control device operatively coupled to the closure member that urges the closure member to remain in the closed position when the closure member is in the closed position and urges the closure member to remain in the open position when the closure member is in the open position. In certain embodiments, the control device can include at least one forcing mechanism.Type: GrantFiled: April 12, 2005Date of Patent: November 27, 2007Assignee: Smoke Guard, Inc.Inventors: Tasche L.
