  • Patent number: 6102100
Abstract: A continuous casting mold for metals is provided that is formed of an assembly of four metallic plates (13, 14) which plates have channels in their respective interiors. The channels are vertically oriented and serve to pass a fluid which is being circulated for the purpose of cooling. Two or more of said plates (13, 14) each have one or more horizontal channels (6a, 6b) in the upper part of the plate, which channels serve for circulation of cooling fluid and are independent of the aforesaid vertical channels, wherewith the said vertical channels are terminated at a level below said upper part of the plate.

  • Patent number: 6103310
Abstract: Method comprising a thermal treatment step proper during which said sheets are in contact with a part of their surface (that is they are, for example, coiled or in tight packets) and a step of preliminary treatment of these surfaces by means of an aqueous solution or a water-alcohol solution into which an organic product of the silane type has been introduced. This treatment makes it possible to prevent the sticking of the sheets; it is particularly effective and it does not require any preliminary activation of the surface.

  • Patent number: 6079242
Abstract: A method of controlling a continuous skin-pass and reduction operation for a metal strip includes the steps of passing a strip through a gap between working rollers of at least two successive rolling stands, only an upstream one of the stands providing substantial thickness reduction of the strip; determining an extension rate of the strip provided by the upstream stand; determining a tension of the strip downstream of the upstream stand; adjusting the speed of the working rollers of the upstream stand compared to the speed of the working rollers of a downstream one of said stands according to the determination of the extension rate; and adjusting the squeezing force of the upstream stand according to the downstream tension determination. A response time to the step of adjustment of the squeezing force is longer than a response time to the step of adjusting the speed of the working rollers.

  • Patent number: 6050324
Abstract: The mold comprises a tubular metal component (4), made of copper or a copper alloy, cooled by water circulation against its external wall and intended to ensure that the cast metal undergoes peripheral solidification on contact with its internal wall, and an uncooled feed head (9) made of a thermally insulating refractory, intended to contain cast metal in the liquid state and sitting on top of the cooled metal component (4) and defining with it a continuous sizing passage for the cast metal. A horizontal metal annulus (16) cooled by internal circulation is added between the feed head (9) and the tubular component (4) and aligned with the internal wall of the latter.

  • Patent number: 6023048
Abstract: Apparatus which eliminates the risk of forming wrinkles on a strip conveyed through a cooling furnace of a continuous heat-treatment plant, especially an annealing or galvanizing furnace, through which the strip is conveyed by rolls, the latter being heated by contact with the strip over its width, the risk of forming wrinkles occuring during a change of strip width when the following strip is wider, the latter consequently passing over rolls that have preserved the imprint of the thermal expansion due to the previous strip, wherein the heating elements are positioned close to and beneath the rolls, over the entire width of the furnace, and, on the opposite side of the rolls from the said heating elements, panels are positioned which are aligned so as, together with the wall of the furnace, to form a warm chamber, the continuously moving strip serving as a heat shield so that only that part of the roll which is not covered by the strip is heated by the said heating elements.
