  • Patent number: 6614298
Abstract: An apparatus and method for operating an adaptive circuit includes injecting a set of orthogonal tracer signals into the circuit. The tracers signals are extracted after modification by at least a portion of the circuit and are examined by respective controllers to modify operation of the circuit. In one embodiment, the invention is incorporated into a feed forward amplifier where a set of orthogonal tracer signals are injected into the amplifier. A detector controller detects the orthogonal tracer signals, as modified by portions of the amplifier, and applies each tracer signal to a respective controller. Each controller examines its respective signal and modifies its output to control a portion of the amplifier accordingly. The controllers apply their outputs to the respective portions of the amplifier at substantially the same time, leading to quick convergence of the operating point of the amplifier to an optimal or near-optimal configuration.

  • Patent number: 6597779
Abstract: A method and system for managing a telephony connection on hold to reduce the use of resources within the telephony network and/or to allow the user on hold to place their telephony device into an on-hook state after they have been placed on hold. In two embodiments, a user of a telephony device who has been placed on hold can initiate a Smart Hold whereby their telephony device can be placed in an on-hook state while on hold and the user will be signaled when the call is to be removed from hold. This allows the user to perform other activities while a Smart Hold has been implemented, without the need to keep a telephone handset to their car, for example. The freeing up of local loop resources can also be achieved. In another embodiment, the Smart Hold can be initiated by either party to a connection without requiring cooperation of the other party. In some embodiments, no toll charges or the like will be incurred while the Smart Hold is in effect.

  • Patent number: 6535592
Abstract: A telecommunication system and method for communicating between at least two end users over a telecommunication network, where the communication is defined by a set of parameters. At least two entities, such as one or both of the end users and/or the service providers negotiate an agreed set of values for said parameters that define the desired communication. The entities also negotiate a warranty agreement with the network service provider defining at least one of the agreed parameters to be warranted including a compensation method to be applied should said at least one monitored parameter fail to meet the corresponding one of said agreed values. The agreed warranted parameters are monitored once the communication is established and, in the event of a failure of the monitored parameters to meet agreed values, at least one of the entities is compensated in accordance with the agreed compensation method.

  • Patent number: 6340915
Abstract: The present invention provides a novel feed forward amplifier (“FFA”) and a pilot tone generator-receiver therefor. In an embodiment of the invention, the feed forward amplifier only requires a single oscillator to operate both the pilot tone generator and pilot tone receiver used in conjunction with the amplifier circuitry of the FFA. In another embodiment of the invention, a method is provided of generating and detecting a pilot tone from a single oscillating signal.
