Abstract: A composite fire barrier fabric including a fire barrier layer and a thermally insulating layer at least partially encloses the core of an open flame resistant mattress. The fire barrier layer and thermally insulating layer are composed of at least one flame-retardant fiber, and not necessarily the same flame retardant fiber. When tested in accordance with the flame resistance test protocols of NFPA 267 or ASTM E 1590, the mattress has a maximum heat release rate of less than 250 kW and a total energy release of less than 40 MJ in the first five minutes of the test.
