Abstract: Self-reducing agglomerates are provided for use in the production of metal. The agglomerates comprise a mixture of iron oxide containing particles and particles of a reducing agent bonded by use of a pre-gel. The agglomerates are produced by a method and apparatus that provides for mixing and curing thereof. The agglomerates may then be used for reduction thereof for the production of iron.
Abstract: A modular apparatus for the production of molten metal by self reduction of agglomerates of metal oxide or of prereduced metal, which may be iron. The apparatus includes a plurality of connected cells of identical size and construction. Each apparatus is connected to equipment for supplying the agglomerates for reduction or melting and refining within a reduction chamber or melting chamber, respectively, of each cell.

Abstract: A method for reducing metal oxides in a shaft furnace. A charge of metal oxide and a reductant is reacted in the furnace to produce a primary metal of the metal oxide and an additional secondary metal. The temperature of the off gas from the reaction is controlled to prevent condensing of the secondary metal so that it remains in the off gas for separation therefrom.
