  • Patent number: 11124706
Abstract: A process for the treatment of thick fine tailings that include constituents of concern (CoCs) and suspended solids is provided. The process includes subjecting the thick fine tailings to treatments including chemical immobilization of the CoCs, polymer flocculation of the suspended solids, and dewatering. The chemical immobilization can include the addition of compounds enabling the insolubilization of the CoCs. Subjecting the thick fine tailings to chemical immobilization and polymer flocculation can facilitate production of a reclamation-ready material, which can enable disposing of the material as part of a permanent aquatic storage structure (PASS).

  • Patent number: 11104595
Abstract: A method is provided for the treatment of waste streams resulting from the processing of hydrocarbons that contain naphthenic acids, for example desalter brine resulting from the extraction or production of hydrocarbons from an oil sands reservoir. Naphthenic acids can be removed from these streams by removing oil-wet solids from the waste stream prior to conventional waste water processing, and the oil-wet solids can further be independently remediated to reduce naphthenic acid concentration for disposal.

  • Patent number: 11001762
Abstract: Partial upgrading processes can include thermal treatment combined with solvent deasphalting, and recycling of certain streams, to process bitumen feedstocks and produce a bitumen product. The thermal treatment can be done so that the feedstock is in liquid phase at conditions below incipient coking conditions. Solvent deasphalting can be done before or after thermal treatment depending on the configuration of the process. Subjecting the bitumen feedstock to a partial upgrading can facilitate viscosity reduction of the bitumen feedstock and can facilitate avoiding the need for the addition of an external source of hydrogen.

  • Publication number: 20210123559
Abstract: Provided herein is a liner that can be loosely inserted in process pipe to form a lined pipe and to decrease the rate of heat transfer between process fluids flowing through the liner and the process pipe. The liner provided herein can reduce applied thermal loading on the outer pipe resulting from, for example, turbulent mixing between fluids having different temperatures (with or without stratification), circumferential thermal gradients, and/or longitudinal thermal gradients. An annulus between the process pipe and liner can be at least partially filled by process fluids, thereby creating a thermal buffer to further decrease the rate of heat transfer between the fluids and the process pipe.

  • Patent number: 10967340
Abstract: A method and device for in-line injecting of flocculated agent into a fluid flow of mature fine tailings (MFT). The method includes the steps of: a) providing a fluid flow of mature fine tailings to be treated along a given channel fluidly connected to the pipeline; b) providing a source of flocculating agent; and c) introducing flocculating agent inside the fluid flow of mature fine tailings via a plurality of injection outlets for injecting the flocculating agent into the fluid flow in a dispersed manner so as to increase an exposed surface area of the injected flocculating agent and thus increase a corresponding reaction with the mature fine tailings, for an improved flocculation of said mature fine tailings, and/or other desired end results. Also disclosed is a kit with corresponding components for assembling the in-line injection device to be connected in-line with the pipeline carrying the mature fine tailings to be treated.

  • Patent number: 10947142
Abstract: Implementations of the present disclosure relate to an apparatus and a method for reducing a selenium-content of a fluid-input stream. The present disclosure includes components and steps for performing chemical modifications of a fluid-input stream and further components and steps for performing physical modifications of a chemically-manipulated fluid stream. When the fluid-input stream has a selenium content the chemical modification of the fluid-input stream drives at least a portion of the selenium content into a selenium-containing solids phase. The chemical modifications include at least oxidation, coagulation, chelation and flocculation. The present disclosure also includes components and steps for performing physical modifications that separate and remove some or all of the selenium-containing solids phase from the liquid phase, which reduces the selenium content of the liquid phase.

  • Patent number: 10899969
Abstract: Techniques for dewatering thick fine tailings may include one or more pre-treatment steps, such as pre-shearing to reduce the yield stress prior to flocculation, hydrocarbon removal below a threshold to improve flocculation and dewatering, flocculant dosing on a clay basis, and providing certain properties of the thick fine tailings related to coarse and fine particle sizes and/or chemistry such as divalent cation content. Various advantages may result from pre-treatments based on thick fine tailings properties, such as reduced flocculant dosage requirements, improved dispersion of flocculant into the thick fine tailings and/or enhanced dewatering, for example. One or more of the pre-treatments may be performed.

  • Patent number: 10876670
Abstract: Implementations of the present disclosure relate to a blind flange and a method of installing same for isolating hazardous energy in order to provide a safe environment for workers to conduct maintenance or repair work on a facility. The blind flange has a body that defines one or more modified bores. The one or more modified bores are alignable with flanged-connection apertures of one side of a flanged connection. The one or more modified bores are configured to receive and releasably hold a connection member therein, so as to connect to only one side of the flanged connection. The modified bores allow a blind flanged-connection to be disassembled and reassemble in less time than known blind flanged-connections when one side of the blind flanged-connection is disconnected from the blind flanged-connection. Furthermore, the blind flange of the present disclosure allows the blind flange to remain connected to one side of a flanged connection while the other side is disconnected.
