  • Patent number: 9210746
Abstract: A power supply to an LED-based street or area light is operated to provide a dimming control signal, which is in turn processed by a circuit to produce 0-10 V DC, pulse width modulated (PWM) signals, or any other suitable signal that can variably control LEDs within the light. The on/off power interruptions could be provided, for example, from a photoelectric control, a timer circuit, or a pre-programmed or manually controlled timer/contactor. The signal to the on/off device could also or instead be initiated by an RF or power line carrier signal to cause the power interruptions.

  • Patent number: 7825793
Abstract: A communication system that provides communication of information between an end user device and a remote end user. The system includes a communication node mounted on the upper part of a utility pole, and drawing its power from the utility pole through a standard NEMA Locking 3 Pole Receptacle, and adapted to communicate with a nearby user device using the low-power communication protocol, such as the ZigBee protocol (ANSI IEEE 802.15.4) or Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) technology, and also adapted to communicate with a neighborhood mesh network of nodes mounted on utility poles. The neighborhood mesh network is capable of communicating, through a regional computer network, with the remote end user.

  • Patent number: 7723862
Abstract: A system and device for using the power provided to street and area lights or other outdoor installations to power auxiliary devices which require a power supply which is different from line voltage for their power requirements. A device adapted to be connected to the NEMA three pole receptacle on a street or area light which converts the line voltage provided to the outdoor installation into a power form required by one or more auxiliary devices which cannot directly use the line current or voltage. The appropriate electrical connector for the auxiliary device may be included. Among the conversions: line voltage up to 480 volts alternating current converted to a user's specified voltage for WiFi, radios, surveillance cameras, traffic monitoring, other monitoring, security cameras, other communications, and UPS systems; DC voltage for the above applications and others; and power over ethernet conversion (for example, 48 volt direct current, 420 milliamperes).

  • Patent number: 6159205
Abstract: An automated method is described for advantageously preparing and treating an eye of the patient. The method further provides a vision-corrective procedure, such as photothermal keratoplasty. The automated method is useful to dry the cornea to reduce or eliminate a tear film on the corneal surface that might otherwise interfere with or reduce the efficacy of a vision-corrective procedure and thereafter to treat the cornea according to a vision-corrective procedure. The automated method is user-friendly, allowing the treatment provider to develop or to select an appropriate pre-treatment and treatment plan and to activate sane using a familiar "Windows" environment. The method has particular application in the area of automated corneal preparation and treatment, it may be used in the automated preparation and treatment of other tissues or substrates.

  • Patent number: 6149643
Abstract: An instrument primarily adapted for use in photothermal keratoplasty procedures to shrink collagen tissue within a cornea of an eye being treated by controlled heating of the tissue with infra-red radiation. In a specific implementation example, a moveable multi-faceted prism is a primary optical element that forms a desired treatment infra-red radiation pattern from a single beam source. Multiple exposures to variations of the radiation pattern are provided. Parameters of two or more exposures to spot radiation patterns are stored in a memory of the instrument, and automatically configure the instrument to deliver the two or more exposures in sequence. Automatic calibration of the radiation intensity is also provided. A guide positions the head of the patient with respect to the instrument, and sensors monitoring movement of both the head and eye provide signals used to by the instrument to control radiation delivery.

  • Patent number: 5779696
Abstract: A noninvasive method is described for performing accurate and controlled reshaping of the anterior surface of the cornea in order to correct ocular refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. The invention uses a light source emitting a wavelength or wavelengths with correct optical penetration depth(s) to induce changes in corneal stromal collagen without damaging the corneal endothelium, together with a light delivery and control means for producing the required irradiance, exposure time, and geometric pattern, in order to achieve the desired change in corneal shape. Corneal shape is monitored before, during, and after the procedure by a corneal topography system. Anterior corneal surface cooling by a transparent heat sink is used to prevent damage to the epithelium and to Bowman's layer.

  • Patent number: 5618284
Abstract: A method and apparatus for controlled thermal shrinkage of collagen tissue by irradiation with coherent energy in the wavelength band of 1.80 to 2.55 microns as generated by a laser. A specific application to ophthalmological corneal reshaping is described. A method for shrinkage of collagen tissue by application of coherent infrared energy, in which the threshold shrinkage temperature is substantially reduced by application of a reagent such as lysozyme to the tissue prior to heating. The method is especially useful in ophthalmology for shape modification of a cornea, and is enhanced by using a corneal collagen shield as a carrier and delivery agent for the reagent and an admixed anaesthetic.

  • Patent number: 5431646
Abstract: A fiber optic probe and its use in performing a sclerostomy (forming a small hole in the sclera of an eye) as a treatment for glaucoma. The minimally dimensioned probe is designed to direct laser light out of its side and, as a result, allows a sclerostomy procedure to be performed with minimal trauma to the conjunctiva and other surrounding ocular tissues of the patient. A series of pulses of infrared laser radiation delivered through the side of the probe forms the hole in the sclera.
