Abstract: Phosphors based on a crystalline matrix of an alkaline earth and a chalcogen together with an activator system are prepared by a process which preferably includes exposure to both S and Se vapors. The phosphors have enhanced light output. IR-stimulable phosphors have stimulation quantum efficiencies above 5%, and preferably include Eu:Sm or Eu:Bi activator systems. Eu:Cu activators provide phosphorescent phosphors.
