    Abstract: A low rotational inertia shuttle system (24) for a dot matrix line printer (20) is disclosed. The low rotational inertia shuttle system (24) includes an elongate support structure (26), a carriage (22) and a counterbalance (62). The carriage and the counterbalance are reciprocally mounted on the support structure. The low rotational inertia shuttle system also includes a reciprocating assembly (60) disposed on the support structure for reciprocating the carriage and the counterbalance. The reciprocating assembly has an inertia that is purposely minimized with respect to the mass of the carriage and the counterbalance, such that the printer operates at a substantially constant level of kinetic energy to produce a substantially linear velocity profile for the carriage.

    Abstract: A preloaded stabilizer mechanism in a dot matrix line printer having a reciprocating carriage is provided to: (1) establish a rigid reference point that prevents the print line of the dot matrix line printer from drifting; (2) eliminate backlash; and, (3) create a carriage resonance frequency that is greater than the carriage operating frequency to enhance printer system stability and the reduction of vibration. The stabilizer mechanism is mounted on a support frame of the dot matrix line printer and includes a modified c-shaped bracket member and a spring plate. The spring plate is attached to one end of the bracket member to form a slot. The slot of the stabilizer mechanism receives an offset shaft that is coupled to a shuttle mechanism that provides the carriage with reciprocating motion. The spring plate of the stabilizer mechanism, being slightly deflected, imposes a force against the offset shaft.

    Abstract: An improved apparatus for reinking a ribbon of a printer ribbon cartridge provides a selected reinking pattern across the width of the ribbon. A porous member in contact with a source of ink has a height equal to a distance between a first edge of the ribbon and a distal edge of a double strike zone of the ribbon. The porous member is in contact with a transfer roller, which in turn is in contact with the ribbon. The ribbon moves through the printer cartridge along a path of a Mobius loop. As the ribbon passes the transfer roller for the first time, ink is provided to a single strike zone and to the double strike zone of the ribbon. As the ribbon passes the transfer roller for the second time, the ribbon is reversed given the pattern of the Mobius loop, and ink is provided again to the double strike zone, as well as to the other single strike zone. Twice as much ink is therefore applied to the double strike zone as to each of the single strike zones.

    Abstract: An integrally-formed print element for providing finer dots than previously possible with an impact printer. The dots produced permit the printing of Chinese, Amharic, Devanagari, and like characters, in sizes as small as standard newsprint, and print in books and periodicals, without significant distortion of the characters. The print element has an axis of symmetry and includes in order a cylindrical base with a longitudinal axis corresponding to the axis of symmetry of the print element; a frusto-conical-shaped impact element support with its largest diameter end extending from one end of the cylindrical base; and a cylindrical impact element located on and extending integrally from the other end of the frusto-conical-shaped support. The overall size of the print element is preferably such that it is attachable to standard impact printer hammer tips.
