Patent number: 6446396Abstract: A wall system for partitioning interior space within a building includes an internal frame made up of vertical posts and horizontal rails extending between the posts. Panels providing a fascia defining a covering on the frame are coupled to the panel by plug-in connectors. The panels may include “smart” elements or fascias providing writing or tack board surfaces, or an accessory element to which shelves or other accessories can be coupled. Heavier capacity shelves can be coupled directly to the posts of the frame. Electrical and/or data connections can be provided via a horizonal rail incorporated in the skin. The rails can include a plug-in module and wire management channels extending outwardly from the module. The wall system may incorporate a pocket door built on the same principle as the overall wall structure. Also disclosed are a pivot door structure and a patch plate for fitting a standard lockset or latchset to a glass door.Type: GrantFiled: June 2, 2000Date of Patent: September 10, 2002Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems LimitedInventors: Lorie Marangoni, Geoffrey Milligan, Zoran Baic, Christine Dominik, Steven Verbeek, Genadij Makarewicz, Ulf Stahmer, Nicolas Koeppe

Patent number: 6427608Abstract: A modular counterline system disclosed which uses separate sections which can be offset, one from the other, to provide flexibility for initial design requirements as well as for changing the layout as the user's needs change. The system also accommodates the convenient capability to allow wires and the like to be added into a raceway or passageway without threading through ports. The system also uses opposed side frames between sections for partially defining the passageway.Type: GrantFiled: November 20, 1995Date of Patent: August 6, 2002Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems LimitedInventor: Jonathan Crinion

Patent number: 6364678Abstract: A power column providing a conduit for power and communications wiring in a building includes a column structure having electrical power outlets and video data modules (VDMs) accessible on opposite flat end faces of the column structure. An isolated electrical raceway within the column structure includes the electrical outlets. The column structure is pre-wired electrically with wiring that extends through the raceway to the top end of the structure. Pre-wiring allows the column to be installed and then connected to an electrical supply after installation.Type: GrantFiled: November 24, 2000Date of Patent: April 2, 2002Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems LimitedInventors: John Hellwig, Steve Verbeek, Paul Crossland, Michael Sherrard, Genadij Makarewicz, Lorie Marangoni

Patent number: 6279998Abstract: A chair comprises a seat; a support for the seat; and, a plurality of biasing members mounted between the support and the seat, the biasing members, in combination, have a compressive strength sufficiently high to essentially resist static movement of a person while seated in the chair and sufficiently low to cushion dynamic loads applied to the seat when a person sits down quickly in the chair. Alternately the chair comprises a plurality of connecting members extending between the seat and the support, each connecting member having at least one first detent member to lockingly connecting the seat to the support.Type: GrantFiled: October 19, 1998Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems, Inc.Inventors: Zooey Chu, Harald Wurl, Hermann Bock

Patent number: 6260921Abstract: A chair back is provided with an adjustable lumbar support member. The vertical height of the lumbar support member and/or the amount of lumbar support which is provided by the chair back may be adjusted. The controls for adjusting the lumbar support member are positionable on the sides and the rear surface of the chair back.Type: GrantFiled: February 25, 1999Date of Patent: July 17, 2001Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems, Inc.Inventors: Zooey Chu, Harald Wurl, Hermann Bock

Patent number: 6253509Abstract: A workspace partition system, for example, for an office building includes a relocatable cable raceway that can be positioned selectively at the belt line or at the baseline of a wall panel of the system depending on where power and data communications are required. Each wall panel of the system includes a structural frame. A raceway element can be selectively coupled to the frame in co-operation with any transverse member of the frame. Front and rear cover plates can be attached to mechanically protect cabling within the raceway. This design allows the panel to be reconfigured on site to change the location of the raceway.Type: GrantFiled: August 13, 1999Date of Patent: July 3, 2001Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems LimitedInventors: John Hellwig, Steven Verbeek, Mike Walker, John Francis Gill, Randy Joseph Verhasselt, Errol Stafford Pearsons

Patent number: 6168247Abstract: A file drawer is disclosed where two opposed top edges of the file drawer include pivoting rails which are movable to one of the two positions. The rails in one position are spaced for supporting letter size file jackets and in the other position support metric A4 size file jackets. This arrangement allows the manufacture of common size file drawers which can easily be adjusted for either filing application.Type: GrantFiled: June 18, 1999Date of Patent: January 2, 2001Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems LimitedInventors: Ulf Stahmer, Christine Dominik, Geoffrey Milligan, Lorie Marangoni

Patent number: 6076317Abstract: Workstations are defined using a combination of office panels and bridge arrangements which are attached to and project at an angle from a spine of office panels. The office panel frames which partially define a workstation provide the convenience of power and communication cabling within the panel frames. The bridge arrangements provide a lower cost alternative defining other walls of the workstation while also providing a system which can be rearranged easily. The bridge arrangements are preferably self supporting in an upright orientation and can easily be detached from a horizontal securing channel of an office panel frame and moved to a new position.Type: GrantFiled: April 28, 1997Date of Patent: June 20, 2000Assignee: Teknion Furniture Systems LimitedInventors: John Hellwig, Jonathan Liberty, Lorie Marangoni
