Abstract: An enhanced-range beacon signal transmitted from a wireless terminal in a frequency band used by the wireless OFDM communications system for OFDM communications. The beacon may be received at each of a plurality of base stations of the wireless OFDM communications system. A location of the wireless terminal may be determined responsive to reception of the beacon signal at the plurality of base stations. In some embodiments, the beacon signal includes a narrowband beacon signal, which may be centered at a frequency offset with respect to a set of subcarriers used in the wireless OFDM communications system, for example, between adjacent subcarriers of the wireless OFDM system and/or in a guard band of the OFDM frequency band.

Abstract: A base station selectively communicates with terminals using first and second separately allocated frequency bands, e.g., separate cellular/PCS bands, of a government spectrum allocation based on propagation conditions between the base station and the terminals. The base station may transmit in the first frequency band and receive in the second frequency band during a first time slot and transmit in the second frequency band and receive in the first frequency band during a second time slot. The base station may transmit to a terminal in the first frequency band while receiving from the terminal in the second frequency band during the first time slot and may transmit to the first terminal in the second frequency band while receiving from the first terminal in the first frequency band during the second time slot.
