  • Patent number: 9428948
Abstract: A fluid-based spring counterbalance mechanism comprising an elastic flexible fluid-based spring disposed between a first plate and a second plate, each plate having a surface in contact with an end of the fluid-based spring. The counterbalance mechanism supports some or all of the weight of a movable barrier. A mechanism is configured to compress the flexible fluid-based spring between the respective surfaces of the two plates in response to motion of the movable barrier. By compressing the fluid-based spring, the counterbalance mechanism provides a force opposed to movement of the movable barrier.

  • Patent number: 9396598
Abstract: Application software for a mobile utilizes a functionality of the mobile device to determine a location and determine whether the location is within a predetermined area surrounding an access control device that controls access to the secured premises. In response to determining that the mobile device is located within the predetermined area, the application software can display identification information for owners or tenants of the secured premises. Upon receipt of a selection received from a user input of the mobile device, the mobile device can communicate with a device of the owner over any suitable communication network in order to be granted access to the secured premises by operation of the access control device.

  • Patent number: 9396648
Abstract: An appliance wirelessly receives any of a plurality of different signals that comprise control instructions from a transmitter for a second appliance other than the appliance and of a different class of appliance. The appliance then provides, in the absence of learning, any of a plurality of different control instructions to be used by the appliance as a function of that received signal. By one approach those wirelessly-received control instructions relate to controllable functions for the second appliance. Pursuant to these teachings, the receiving appliance effectively converts a received control instruction that relates to one kind of functionality for a given kind of appliance into a control instruction that relates to a different kind of functionality and that is usable by a different kind of appliance.

  • Patent number: 9376851
Abstract: A barrier operator feature enhancement device is designed to provide one or more features found in modern barrier operator devices and to incorporate those features into a previously installed barrier operator system. To facilitate ease of use, the barrier operator feature enhancement device can communicate with a large variety of barrier operators. Such communication may be wireless or wired, depending on the communication protocol implemented by a particular previously installed barrier operator. To facilitate the ease of installation, the device is designed to configure itself to operate with the communication protocol of the previously installed barrier operator. Once configured to be able to communicate with the previously installed barrier operator, the feature enhancement device works with the barrier operator to provide one or more additional features to enhance the capabilities of the previously installed barrier operator.

  • Patent number: 9371678
Abstract: A barrier sensor device and associated control device monitor operation of a barrier operator system. The barrier sensor device monitors operation of barrier operators for undesirable amounts of strain without barrier operator force as an input. The barrier sensor device instead detects both motion and tilt of a barrier. By monitoring these two aspects of barrier operation, the barrier sensor device compiles data that can be analyzed by the control device and compared to un-strained or previously compiled barrier operator data to determine whether the barrier operator system is under strain and requires service.

  • Patent number: 9367978
Abstract: Application software for a mobile device can provide an owner or operator of a premises with the ability to remotely grant a guest authorization to access an access control device on or in the premises. The access control device can control the operation of the one or more secondary devices, so that with the owner authorization, the guest can access the access control device to cause an action at the premises with the secondary device. The application software can further provide the owner/operator the ability to restrict the third party access, such as temporally or spatially.

  • Patent number: 9347254
Abstract: An access controller apparatus and method for controlling physical access to an area are provided to determine a current priority level setting of the access controller and to ignore a received command in response to a comparison of the priority level of the received command to the current priority level setting of the access controller. Thus, a prioritized response to commands is provided such that commands of certain priority levels can be acted upon in certain situations. This helps allow for proper responses to multiple conflicting commands and for prioritized responses to commands of greater importance or of universal impact.

  • Patent number: 9331626
Abstract: A movable barrier operator apparatus having a motor and a control system is disclosed. The motor is configured to couple to a movable barrier. The control system is configured to cause the motor to move the movable barrier by supplying power to the motor. The control system is further configured to selectively supply nonoperational power to the motor to generate heat without moving the movable barrier.

  • Patent number: 9249612
Abstract: A movable barrier operator controls access to a secured area which houses vehicles. The movable barrier operator is operable to move a movable barrier from an open to a closed position. A sensor controls the operation of a service-providing device through the controller of a movable barrier operator or by direct communication to a controller for the service-providing device. The sensing device senses whether a vehicle is present in the secured area. The sensor is operatively connected to the moveable barrier operator and is used to control the operation of at least one service-providing device without necessarily effecting movement of a barrier by the movable barrier operator. Operation of the service-providing device is effected upon sensing whether a vehicle is present in the secured area to effect an operation of the service-providing device.

  • Patent number: 9217283
Abstract: An apparatus having a base portion configured to be secured to a mounting surface and a sensor connected to the base portion that is configured to interface with an elongate member and measure one or more characteristics of the elongate member as the elongate member moves from being wound up on or paid out from a rotatable drive of a movable barrier operator. The one or more characteristics can include, for example, position, velocity, and direction of movement of the elongate member. By measuring the one or more characteristics of the elongate member, corresponding properties of a movable barrier connected to the elongate member can be accurately determined. The apparatus may be also used to supplement an estimate of the properties of the movable barrier obtained from measurement of the rotatable drive and provide a more accurate estimate of the movable barrier properties.

  • Patent number: 9219721
Abstract: A device newly introduced to a network is automatically credentialed to be able to communicate over a network before the device first communicates with the network. For example, at a point of purchase, a user can provide network identification information to a merchant computing device that effects transfer of that information to the new device such that the new device can communicate directly with the network without initial credentialing directly between the unique device and the local network. In another example, the merchant computing device communicates with the local network to register a newly purchased device with the local network before the newly purchased device is introduced to the network. Accordingly, the network is configured to begin communications with the unique device without initial credentialing directly between the unique device and the local network.

  • Patent number: 9177430
Abstract: A system includes a translator device that is configured to receive, using a pre-programmed native mode of operation, a first barrier actuation code transmitted by a transmitter according to a first code format. The translator device then analyzes the first barrier actuation code and verifies that it is a valid code. When a valid code, the translator device saves the information contained in the code, and creates a second barrier actuation code at least in part from information contained in the first actuation code and transmits the second barrier actuation code according to the second code format, which is different from the first code format. A barrier operator is coupled to the translator device and a barrier. The barrier operator has a receiver apparatus and the receiver apparatus receives the second barrier actuation code. The barrier operator determines whether the second barrier actuation code is valid, and when the barrier actuation code is determined to be valid, actuates the barrier.

  • Publication number: 20150279202
Abstract: A movable barrier operator remote control is provided having a receiver configured to receive a signal from another remote control, a user input of a control interface, a memory, a transmitter, and a controller. The controller automatically both senses for the receiver receiving a signal and senses for a status of at least a portion of the control interface, and associates with the user input one or more movable barrier operator signal characteristics from the received signal or the status of the at least a portion of the control interface. A remote control is also provided having a controller configured to detect the configuration of a switch input, sense for a receiver receiving a signal in response to the switch input having a first configuration, and sense for a status of at least a portion of a control interface in response to the switch input having a second configuration.
