    Abstract: This invention relates to a rubber composition containing filler reinforcement comprised of precipitated silica with silica coupling agent therefore and conjugated diene-based elastomer which contains end-chain functionalization with multi-functional groups. The groups functionalizing the elastomer are multi-functional in the sense of containing one group reactive with at least one of said precipitated silica and silica coupling agent and another different group reactive with diene-based elastomers through sulfur cure of the rubber composition. A sulfur cured rubber composition containing said end-chain functionalization is provided. A tire is provided having a component comprised of said rubber composition. Representative of said tire component is a tire tread.

    Abstract: A tire wear state estimation system includes a CAN bus system disposed on a vehicle. A tire supporting the vehicle is mounted on a wheel. A wheel sensor unit is mounted on a structure adjacent the wheel, and the wheel sensor unit includes a longitudinal acceleration sensor to generate a longitudinal acceleration signal. The wheel sensor unit also includes a vertical acceleration sensor to generate a vertical acceleration signal, and transmission means to communicate the longitudinal acceleration signal and the vertical acceleration signal to the CAN bus system. A processor receives the longitudinal acceleration signal and the vertical acceleration signal. An extractor extracts a tire translational mode from the longitudinal acceleration signal and a tire vertical mode from the vertical acceleration signal. The tire translational mode and the tire vertical mode are input into a classifier to generate a wear state estimation for the tire. A method is also provided.

    Abstract: A reader system for a tire with an integrated radio frequency identification (RFID) and tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensor, in which the integrated RFID and TPMS sensor is mounted on the tire, is provided. The reader system includes at least one antenna that is external to the tire. The at least one antenna is mounted on a vehicle on which the tire is mounted in a location proximate the tire. The at least one antenna is in electronic communication with the integrated RFID and TPMS sensor. A reader is mounted on the vehicle and is also in electronic communication with the at least one antenna. The at least one antenna relays a signal from the integrated RFID and TPMS sensor to the reader. A display device is in electronic communication with the reader to receive and display data from the integrated RFID and TPMS sensor.

    Abstract: A tire includes a pair of sidewalls extending from a respective bead area to a tread. The tread is formed with a plurality of tread elements and a radially outer surface. A sensor unit is mounted to the tire and includes a pair of electrical contacts. The tread wear sensor plug includes a cylindrical projection extending through an opening formed in one of the tread elements, a flange, and a wire including proximal ends disposed in the flange and a distal end near a radially outer surface of the projection. An electrical circuit is formed by each proximal end of the wire electrically contacting a respective one of the sensor unit electrical contacts. When the tread element and the cylindrical projection wear down to the distal end of the wire, the wire and the circuit break. A notice is transmitted by the sensor unit when the circuit breaks.

    Abstract: A tire sensor container system is provided. A tire includes a carcass toroidally extending from a first bead area to a second bead area, and an innerliner formed on an inner surface of the carcass. The tire sensor container system includes a tire pressure monitoring system sensor, which in turn includes a rigid housing that is formed with an oval shape. A flexible container is mounted to the innerliner. The container includes a base and a wall extending radially outwardly from the base, and the wall terminates in a lip. The container wall is formed with an oval shape that cooperates with the shape of the tire pressure monitoring sensor housing. A cavity is defined by the base, the wall, and the lip, and cavity receives and secures the tire pressure monitoring system sensor. The system reduces sensor rotation and maintains consistent sensor orientation to improve sensor functionality and longevity.

    Abstract: A rubber composition for a tire tread chimney component includes a sulfur-vulcanizable elastomer and an electrically conductive polymer. The rubber composition is further defined by an absence of electrically conductive carbon black. The sulfur-vulcanizable elastomer is selected from the group consisting of natural rubber, polybutadiene, polyisoprene, styrene butadiene rubber, nitrile rubber, and combinations thereof. The sulfur-vulcanizable elastomer and the electrically conductive polymer are substantially evenly mixed together. In the tire, and upon curing, the tire tread chimney component provides a dissipative pathway for static electricity from the tire to the ground in operation.
