    Abstract: An apparatus for controlling the flow of coolant through a nuclear fuel assembly, in which a coolant flow restrictor 26 having longitudinal ducts 30 is provided with plug members 48, 49, 50 of different lengths. The plug members 48, 49, 50 are moved longitudinally by the effect of neutron induced growth on an actuating member 60. A connecting member 53 converts the growth of the actuating member 60 into a longitudinal movement of the plug members 48, 49, 50 so that they are progressively withdrawn from the flow restrictor 26 to increase the flow of coolant through the flow restrictor 26.

The gases can be collected and the fluid can flow along a diffuser section to recover pressure. The constriction can be formed by the axial outlet part of a votex valve included in the flow line. Cavitation in the fluid can be regulated by the control fluid supplied to the vortex valve.

    Abstract: Apparatus for simulating inspection equipment, e.g. ultrasonic NDT equipment or ultrasonic medical diagnostics equipment, comprises a test body, a simulated probe for scanning over the body, a probe position monitor, inspection data storage, a display and a central processor for correlating display of the inspection data with scanning movement of the probe. The inspection data is derived from non-simulated scanning of for example a structure containing defects and the ultrasonic waveforms obtained during such non-simulated scanning may be stored in memory for providing a realistic display during simulated scanning of the test body. The simulated probe may incorporate an ultrasonic device for the purpose of sensing the degree of coupling between the simulated transducer and the test body and the output of the device may be used to modify the inspection data to provide a displayed signal which is dependent on the coupling achieved by the operator.

    Abstract: A method and an apparatus are provided for detecting magnetic discontinuities, for example corrosion pits, in a specimen of magnetizable material. A horseshoe shaped magnet (32) is supported with its poles just clear of a surface of the specimen (12) by a wheeled frame (20), and is moved over the surface. An array of sensors (48) between the poles detects the leakage flux near the surface. The signal from any one sensor at a particular location is corrected by subtracting from it the average of the signals from the same sensor at a plurality of other locations preceding and following that location. If the corrected signal exceeds a threshold value, this indicates abnormally large localized leakage flux, and so indicates metal loss from the specimen.
