    Abstract: A polarization insensitive electro-optic modulator is constructed by providing a polarization beamsplitter to separate an incoming light beam into two orthogonally plane polarized beams. Each of the polarized beams passes through a separate electro-optic modulator where each beam is modulated by the same data signal. After modulation the beams are combined to yield a modulated beam having modulated components that are orthogonally polarized. Not only is this device insensitive to changes in polarization of the input beam, the final modulated beam can be detected by optical receivers without regard to polarization alignment of the modulated beam and the receiver.

    Abstract: A vacuum compatible hyperthermal atom generator includes a membrane having two sides, the membrane having the capability of dissolving atoms into the membrane's bulk. A first housing is furnished in operative association with the first side of the membrane to provide for the exposure of the first side of the membrane to a gas species. A second housing is furnished in operative association with the second side of the membrane to provide a vacuum environment having a pressure of less than 1.times.10.sup.-3 Torr on the second side of the membrane. Exciting means excites atoms adsorbed on the second side of the membrane to a non-binding state so that a portion from 0% to 100% of atoms adsorbed on the second side of the membrane are released from the second side of the membrane primarily as an atom beam.

    Abstract: A flux-focusing electromagnetic sensor which uses a ferromagnetic flux-focusing lens simplifies inspections and increases detectability of fatigue cracks and material loss in high conductivity material. The unique feature of the device is the ferrous shield isolating a high-turn pick-up coil from an excitation coil. The use of the magnetic shield is shown to produce a null voltage output across the receiving coil in the presence of an unflawed sample. A redistribution of the current flow in the sample caused by the presence of flaws, however, eliminates the shielding condition and a large output voltage is produced, yielding a clear unambiguous flaw signal.The maximum sensor output is obtained when positioned symmetrically above the crack. Hence, by obtaining the position of the maximum sensor output, it is possible to track the fault and locate the area surrounding its tip.

The anhydride terminated amide acid oligomers and co-oligomers are prepared from the reaction of diamine(s) and diamine containing pendent phenylethynyl group(s) with an excess of dianhydride(s) and subsequently endcapped with a phenylethynyl amine or monofunctional amine. The polymerizations are carried out in polar aprotic solvents such as under nitrogen at room temperature.

    Abstract: A method of forming a shock-free supersonic elliptic nozzle, in which the nozzle to be designed is divided into three sections, a circular-to-elliptic section which begins at a circular nozzle inlet, an elliptic subsonic section downstream from the circular-to-elliptic section and a supersonic section downstream from the elliptic subsonic section. The maximum and minimum radii for each axial point in the circular-to-elliptic section and the elliptic subsonic section are then separately determined, the maximum and minimum radii being the radii for the widest part of an elliptic cross-section and the narrowest part of the elliptic cross-section, respectively. The maximum and minimum radii for each axial point in the supersonic section are determined based on the Method of Characteristics, Then, each of the three sections are based on the maximum and minimum radii for each axial point in the section. The resulting nozzle is acoustically superior.

    Abstract: A device for measuring turbulence in high-speed flows is provided which includes a micro-sensor thin-film probe. The probe is formed from a single crystal of aluminum oxide having a 14.degree. half-wedge shaped portion. The tip of the half-wedge is rounded and has a thin-film sensor attached along the stagnation line. The bottom surface of the half-wedge is tilted upward to relieve shock induced disturbances created by the curved tip of the half-wedge. The sensor is applied using a microphotolithography technique.

    Abstract: A capacitor having two substantially parallel conductive faces is acoustically coupled to a conductive sample end such that the sample face is one end of the capacitor. A non-contacting dielectric may serve as a spacer between the two conductive plates. The formed capacitor is connected to an LC oscillator circuit such as a Hartley oscillator circuit producing an output frequency which is a function of the capacitor spacing. This capacitance oscillates as the sample end coating is oscillated by an acoustic wave generated in the sample by a transmitting transducer. The electrical output can serve as an absolute indicator of acoustic wave displacement.

    Abstract: A time interval unit which operates in accordance with electronic sampling techniques and employing a pair of identical sampling interpolators which are respectively triggered at the start and stop of the time interval to be measured. Each time interval unit includes a GHz frequency sinusoidal clock signal generator and a time counter in the form of a pulse counter and a pair of sampling type interpolators which are respectively triggered on in response to a start and a stop signal. When triggered, each interpolator samples the instantaneous amplitude of the in-phase(x) and quadrature(y) components of the sinusoidal clock signal. From the samples of the x and y components and the pulse counter's result, the elapsed time between two events is computed to a psec accuracy.

The voltage across the current-measuring impedance which comprises a resistor is thereafter sensed, amplified and conditioned to provide a voltage which is proportional to the load current and accordingly a measure of the current input from the current source being measured. Such a current-measuring circuit can be used in connection with an inverter, a current-measuring amplifier, a current-measuring precision diode, a current integrator, and a current-measuring bridge.

    Abstract: The invention is a direct process for preparing semi-crystalline polyimides. This process comprises the steps of: providing a polar aprotic solvent, adding a dianhydride and a diamine to the solvent to form a mixture, stirring the mixture at ambient temperature, and adding glacial acetic acid to the mixture to provide a ratio of polar aprotic solvent to glacial acetic acid which ranges from about 90 to 10 to about 75 to 25 by volume to form a solution. The solution was heated to a range from about 110.degree. C. to about 140.degree. C. to form a polyimide precipitate. The polyimide precipitate was recovered as a semi-crystalline polyimide powder.

    Abstract: A control system and method for prosthetic devices is provided. The control system comprises a transducer for receiving movement from a body part for generating a sensing signal associated with that movement. The sensing signal is processed by a linearizer for linearizing the sensing signal to be a linear function of the magnitude of the distance moved by the body part. The linearized sensing signal is normalized to be a function of the entire range of body part movement from the no-shrug position of the moveable body part through the full-shrug position of the moveable body part. The normalized signal is divided into a plurality of discrete command signals. The discrete command signals are used by typical converter devices which are in operational association with the prosthetic device. The converter device uses the discrete command signals for driving the moveable portions of the prosthetic device and its sub-prosthesis.

    Abstract: Sewn, quilted ceramic blankets (AFRSI) and integrally woven core insulation systems (TABI) were examined in a 170 decibel aeroacoustic environment under oscillating air loads. Preconditioning in a radiant heat source was done at both 2000.degree. F. and 2500.degree. F. before testing. A multi-layer ceramic weave construction based on an angle interlock weave architecture is superior over all other TPS systems examined. These configurations do not require a surface coating to enhance survivability. Single-ply TABI fabric surfaces using an insulated integrally woven core structure survive up to 2000.degree. F. without the use of a ceramic coating to toughen the surface to the aeroacoustic noise level. AFRSI blankets of the art require a ceramic coating in order to demonstrate comparable performance after exposure to a 2000.degree. F. radiant heat temperature.

    Abstract: A cylinder rounding/holding tool that is positioned in the center of the rotary table and bolted to a base plate for rigidity. The tool is formed from a metal frame that is circular on the inside diameter to form a locating boss and has flats on the exterior corresponding to the number of shoes required for the application. At each flat is a shoe that has two mechanical jacks (one at each end of the shoe) and a center guide tube. The jacks are powered by DC electric stepper motors that allow precise radial displacement of the shoes. The center guide tubes provide circumferential and axial load carrying capability and stability for the tool. The shoes are replaceable to allow machining to match the inner diameter of the cylinder being rounded. A computer controller may be used to control the stepper motors and a linear variable displacement transducer may be used for input to the computer controller and a real time feedback loop for roundness condition of the cylinder.

    Abstract: An alkali metal thermoelectric converter (AMTEC) having a plurality of cells structurally connected in series to form a septum dividing a plenum into two chambers, and electrically connected in series, is provided with porous metal anodes and porous metal cathodes in the cells. The cells may be planar or annular, and in either case a metal alkali vapor at a high temperature is provided to the plenum through one chamber on one side of the wall and returned to a vapor boiler after condensation at a chamber on the other side of the wall in the plenum. If the cells are annular, a heating core may be placed along the axis of the stacked cells. This arrangement of series-connected cells allows efficient generation of power at high voltage and low current.
