Patent number: 5299566Abstract: A method of administering a surfactant dispersion to the lungs of a patient in need of such treatment is disclosed. The method comprises heating the dispersion and nebulizing the heated dispersion to produce respirable surfactant particles. The respirable surfactant particles delivered to the lungs of the patient. By heating the dispersion the amount of phospholipid delivered to the lungs of the patient is increased. The dispersion is comprised of a phospholipid dispersed in an aqueous carrier. In a particular embodiment of the invention, the phospholipid is preferably dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC) included in an amount from about 8 to 50 milligrams per milliliter of aqueous carrier, and the dispersion is preferably heated to a temperature between about 25.degree. C. and 75.degree. C.Type: GrantFiled: September 18, 1992Date of Patent: April 5, 1994Assignees: Burroughs Wellcome Co., The Wellcome Foundation LTDInventors: Craig W. Davis, Rodney G. Snyder

Patent number: 4319194Abstract: Aggregation of blood-platelets is detected by using a test cell which contains two electrodes which extend into the sample. So as to maximize the change in resistance between the electrodes which occurs as platelets aggregate on them, they are each rod-shaped and of not more than about 0.25 mm in diameter. The resistance between the electrodes is detected using an AC signal to avoid polarization effects. The test cell may be constructed so as to be a disposable item.Type: GrantFiled: October 1, 1979Date of Patent: March 9, 1982Assignees: Burroughs Wellcome Co., Wellcome Foundation Ltd.Inventors: David C.
