  • Patent number: 6240280
Abstract: When an RDS or RBDS radio is used to listen to prerecorded media, the tuner monitors an RDS station in the background to determine when a traffic announcement is in progress. A search for selecting an appropriate station for background monitoring is provided which selects a station which is most likely to be in accordance with the individual preferences of the driver. The search method can also be used to find traffic capable stations, weather stations, emergency alert information, and news broadcasts.

  • Patent number: 6112063
Abstract: An autoset or auto-store function for a radio receiver selects stations for storing in association with respective presets according to the stored station format of the normal presets which have been manually set by the radio user for their home area. When activating the autoset feature when traveling out-of-town, the invention ensures consistent station formats at the presets according to the scheme adopted by the user. For any presets that have no station content code stored for them or for which no matching broadcast can be found during the autoset scan, a fill is conducted to associate listenable broadcasts with these remaining presets.

  • Patent number: 6112064
Abstract: A multi-function RDS button and a menu driven interface for accessing RDS features facilitates easy access to RDS functions with minimal demands upon the attention of the user. Large numbers of push buttons with cryptic labels and unintuitive push-button sequences of prior RDS radio receivers are avoided. Due to a long time-out period provided before automatically exiting the menu, the user can alternate attention between the radio and the road without losing their place in the menu or initiating an unwanted action.

  • Patent number: 5654763
Abstract: In order to increase decoding safety of the address frame of a teletext page during the reception of teletext data, and in particular of a page containing higher level supplementary data, without having to apply additional error control steps, the address frame for a teletext row is forecast from the decoded material, and if required, with a corrected address frame of the preceding teletext row. The forecast address frame is compared with the actually received address frame of the succeeding teletext row. If a deviation at two or more information units of a byte are detected during the comparison, and if required during decoding of the received address frame, the forecast address frame is used instead of the received address frame for addressing the data stream of the concerned teletext row.

  • Patent number: 5650826
Abstract: A data stream is separated from a television signal during the reception of data transmitted in the television signal. The data associated with a given page are collected. The pages thus assembled are temporarily stored. One or more separated pages with lists are transmitted and processed by the decoder at the receiver. Images and image sequences, if necessary, together with a text page, are displayed and sounds are reproduced using circuitry, such as the image and sound decoders, respectively, that already exist in a receiver compatible with digital signal transmission. A given separate page, referred to as the text-image-sound link table, contains addressing information and corresponding codes for image and/or sound data which are in the data stream. The separate page also contains search words and the text page numbers associated with the search words. When a specifically highlighted search word is selected by the user in a selected text page, a selection process is initialized.

  • Patent number: 5584051
Abstract: The present invention provides for an analog and/or digital radio broadcast transmission system and radio receiver therefor, which includes a control signal having an item of control information concerning another, different type of transmission/receive system. The receiver is a hybrid receiver able to receive both types of signals. When the same program material is available on both of the different systems, the control signal is used for switching the different systems so that the receiver receives the program on the system which provides the best reception.
