  • Patent number: 8820281
Abstract: A camshaft for an internal combustion engine, having a hollow outer shaft and an inner shaft which is concentrically mounted inside the outer shaft to be rotatable about an angle and a multi-part cam element having a first cam section that is mounted on the outer shaft in a rotationally fixed manner and a second cam section that is connected to the inner shaft in a rotationally fixed manner and rotationally mounted on the outer shaft. The two cam sections have different cam contours, the relative movement of the two cam sections in opposite directions allowing the resulting cam contour of the cam element interacting with a cam follower to be changed to adjust the variable valve opening period. The two cam sections have different maximum lifts, the cam top section of the cam section having the smaller maximum lift being substantially formed by an annular sector.

Abstract: A camshaft contains a support tube, on which components including at least one cam are arranged at predetermined locations. The support tube extends at least partially through a hole in the components, and wherein a press fit is produced between the support tube and the components by hydroforming. Accordingly, at least one locally formed material formation is provided between the support tube and the hole. Via the material formation, the component is retained at the location in a desired orientation relative to the support tube in such a way that the support tube having the mounted components can be fed for hydroforming.

  • Patent number: 8402650
Abstract: A method for producing a built-up cam shaft and a built-up cam shaft having a shaft are provided. A functional component is produced in a separate manufacturing process and has an internal orifice to receive the shaft. The orifice in the functional component is substantially round to receive the shaft, and an insertion mechanism is provided on the raised areas and/or at the orifice in the functional component, which allow the functional component to be pushed onto the raised areas substantially without shavings being produced. The raised areas partially dig into the orifice and in so doing connect the functional component to the shaft in a non-positive and positive manner substantially by deformation of the material of the functional component in the region of the orifice in the functional component.

  • Publication number: 20120279467
Abstract: A camshaft that is assembled or is to be assembled carries at least one cam element that is to be disposed on a main camshaft body to be rotationally fixed and axially movable, and at least one cam element to be disposed on the main camshaft body so as to be rotationally fixed and axially immovable. The main camshaft body has first axial sub-sections having a multi-tooth profile, so that due to a positive connection between shaft and hub the cam element to be disposed in the sub-section so as to be axially movable is seated so as to be rotationally fixed. The main camshaft body also has second axial sub-sections having an extended diameter so that by a non-positive connection between shaft and hub it is ensured that the cam element to be disposed in the sub-section is seated so as to be rotationally fixed and secured against movement.
