Abstract: An improved surgical sponge having a contrast agent, such as bismuth beads, secured to the sponge material in a unique pattern of a type not found in nature or in human anatomy. The unique pattern is preferably spaced dots or circles having various sizes and spacing, potentially arranged in a matrix of rows and columns. The desired unique pattern is arranged such that the dots or other non-natural shapes are large enough to remain visible, while small enough to avoid adversely affecting the pliability and absorption of the sponge.
