Abstract: A process for producing triterpene alcohol, comprising sequentially conducting the following steps (A) to (C): (A) subjecting ?-oryzanol to alkaline hydrolysis; (B) mixing the alkaline hydrolysate with a low polarity organic solvent, and extracting triterpene alcohol to obtain a triterpene alcohol-containing low polarity organic solvent; and (C) adding water to the triterpene alcohol-containing low polarity organic solvent thus obtained, removing the low polarity organic solvent, and then melting triterpene alcohol in hot water, followed by cooling.

Abstract: A ferulic acid derivative represented by the general formula (1); a process for preparing a ferulic acid derivative represented by the general formula (1), comprising reacting ferulic acid or an ester thereof represented by the general formula (2) with a dihalomethane represented by the general formula CH2X2, wherein X is a halogen atom; and an ultraviolet light-absorbent composition comprising the ferulic acid derivative. Since the ultraviolet light absorbent composition is not only excellent in the ultraviolet light absorption but also very stable against heat, the ultraviolet light absorbent composition can be suitably used as cosmetics which especially require long-term stability.

Abstract: A waste oil, an alkaline oil cake, and a crude fatty acid which are discarded as waste materials or obtained as a by-product in the manufacture of rice salad oil are subjected to hydrolysis in the presence of an alkali so as to efficiently manufacture ferulic acid. The waste materials or by-product accompanying the manufacture of rice salad oil or rice fatty acid, which were disposed of by means of burning in the past, are effectively utilized in the method of the present invention.
