    Abstract: Channel power management may be achieved in a branched optical communication system such that uniform loading is provided across branch channels on a branch drop path without passing information signals that are not intended for the branch terminal to the branch drop path. In general, a system and method consistent with the present disclosure reuses one or more loading signals (e.g., noise bands) from the branch add path to maintain uniform loading in the branch drop path of the same branch. The system and method thus prevents trunk channels from being dropped to a branch terminal when those trunk channels are not intended for the branch terminal.

    Abstract: A method and system for remotely upgrading a remote device may be used to upgrade application programs in devices that are difficult to access physically, such as undersea optical devices in an optical communication system. The method and system uses a Non-Erasable Application (NEA) to manage the upgrade of an application program, to determine if the application program is valid, and to provide default application functions if the application program is not valid. The NEA may be stored on a memory that is not remotely erasable and the application program may be stored on a memory that is non-volatile and programmable. Code status indicators may be used to indicate if the application program is valid, for example, to indicate that the code is present and functional.

    Abstract: Polarization multiplexing with different differential phase shift keying (DPSK) schemes generally uses DPSK modulated signals modulated using different DPSK modulation schemes and combined with orthogonal polarizations relative to each other. The different DPSK modulation schemes may use different DPSK phase shifts to represent data, such as a regular DPSK modulation scheme and a ?/2 DPSK modulation scheme. By using different DPSK modulation schemes to represent data on the orthogonally polarized signals, the DPSK demodulators may effectively separate the orthogonally polarized signals using the property of the DPSK receivers. To optimize performance, the DPSK modulated signals may also be bit-interleaved when combined with orthogonal polarization.

    Abstract: A soft decision threshold control system and method may be used with a forward error correction (FEC) scheme to adjust or tune one or more soft decision thresholds in response to one or more bit value averages for the threshold(s) and in response to a bit error rate (BER). The bit value average for a soft decision threshold generally refers to an average number of binary values (e.g., logic ones and/or zeros) occurring in a bit stream detected using the soft decision threshold. For different BER levels in a particular system, for example, one or more of the soft decision thresholds may have a predetermined bit value average, which has been determined to provide a certain level of performance (e.g., an optimum performance). Thus, one or more of the soft decision thresholds may be adjusted such that the bit value averages for the soft decision thresholds are adjusted as a function of the BER.
