Abstract: This invention relates to a flavonoid composition that includes eriocitrin. The flavonoid may be included in a complex with other bioflavonoids. The composition may also include neoeriocitrin. This invention also relates to methods of using the composition, including for reducing IL-6 or MCP-1 treating inflammation, and treating symptoms of metabolic syndrome.

Abstract: Provided herein are methods of using yeast cells to produce ethanol by contacting a mixture comprising xylose with a Spathaspora yeast cell under conditions suitable to allow the yeast to ferment at least a portion of the xylose to ethanol. The methods allow for efficient ethanol production from hydrolysates derived from lignocellulosic material and sugar mixtures including at least xylose and glucose or xylose, glucose and cellobiose.

Abstract: A method of ameliorating acid soils so as to enhance plant growth is provided by adding to soil 0.05 to 20 percent by weight, based on the weight of the soil, of a flue gas desulfurization by-product consisting essentially of 80-99 percent by weight of gypsum (CaSO.sub.4.2H.sub.2 O) and 1-20 percent by weight of magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH).sub.2).
