  • Patent number: 9272716
Abstract: An anti-theft device for use with a locomotive horn is disclosed. An angled L-shaped bracket of the anti-theft device has a horizontal portion that is connected to an anti-theft or tamper proof fastener used to attach a base of the horn to the locomotive. A vertical portion of the bracket receives a shackle portion of a padlock for connection with and locking on the bracket. A bushing is placed on the shackle portion of the padlock over the anti-theft fastener to limit slack of the padlock relative to the bracket. When assembled with the locomotive horn, the anti-theft device at least partially covers the anti-theft fastener such that access to and/or removal of at least the anti-theft fastener is substantially prevented. Thus, theft of the horn is reduced and/or prevented.

  • Publication number: 20150285264
Abstract: Provided is a self-contained, closed-loop cooling system for an air compressor, and a method of controlling a temperature of the compressor. The air compressor provides compressed air to an associated system. The air compressor includes a passage for a flow of coolant therethrough. A pump pumps an input flow of coolant into the air compressor, and a heat exchanger cools an output flow of coolant from the air compressor. Fluid delivery lines connect the air compressor, the pump, and the heat exchanger in a closed loop configuration, such that the coolant is not subject to contact with atmospheric air or other systems. The cooling system is associated solely with the air compressor for cooling its parts.

  • Patent number: 9004994
Abstract: Disclosed is a system and method for decreasing airflow and improving ventilation within a tunnel, such as a railroad tunnel, including a path for movement of a vehicle (e.g., train) therethrough. The system has a plurality of air baffles mounted within the tunnel, each device comprising a body and a mounting device. Each mounting device positions each body inside and along the length of the tunnel between the entrance and the exit. The air baffles are configured to restrict airflow at least in part in a longitudinal direction of the tunnel, thereby increasing a relative difference between a vehicle speed and air speed in a tunnel annulus when the vehicle passes through the tunnel. The restriction (e.g., decrease) of airflow in the tunnel reduces the piston effect resulting from the vehicle or train passing through, thus reducing emissions and heat generated by the locomotives in the tunnel.

  • Patent number: 8914168
Abstract: Data representative of a train consist (the train consist comprising a plurality of locomotives and a plurality of cars) and data representative of a route for the train consist can be processed by a processor to automatically determine which locomotives in the train consist should be powered on and which locomotives in the train consist should be shut down for each segment of the route. The processor can make these determinations based on an analysis of the train consist data and the route data with respect to a plurality of considerations that affect train efficiency. Recommendations for locomotive startups and shutdowns in accordance with such automated determinations can then be presented to the train crew for the crew to use during train operations. It is believed that when train crews are in compliance with such recommendations, significant improvements in efficiency, particularly with respect to fuel consumption, can be achieved.
