Patents Assigned to Unity Health Toronto
  • Patent number: 11998549
Abstract: The present disclosure relates generally to treatment and diagnosis of diseases, disorders or conditions characterized by vascular leakage. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to methods for treating a vascular leakage-associated disease or disorder in a subject; for reducing vascular leakage in a subject; for reducing reactive oxygen species production in a subject; for inducing apoptosis of neutrophils in a subject; and for increasing survival of a subject having a vascular leakage-associated disease or disorder. The methods comprise administering a G9a and/or G9a-like protein (GLP) methyltransferase inhibitor to the subject. The present disclosure further relates to methods for developing a treatment plan for a subject with a vascular leakage-associated disease, disorder or condition, and for identifying a subject as a candidate for treatment of a vascular leakage-associated disease or disorder.

  • Patent number: 11553905
Abstract: A device, method, and use of a device for temporary management of a wound, such as a wound in a heart. The device has a shaft, a blood flow blocking membrane at the first end of the shaft for blocking blood flow through the wound, and an abutment member that is mounted to the shaft and is axially movable along the shaft towards and away from the blood flow blocking membrane for abutting the wound and holding the blood flow blocking membrane adjacent the wound. The blood flow blocking membrane is resiliently flexible and movable between at least a first collapsed state for inserting the blood flow blocking membrane through the wound, and a deployed state for blocking blood flow through the wound.

  • Patent number: 11389609
Abstract: A tracheotomy device includes a head with a head proximal end and a head distal end. The head has a dilating member, and the dilating member has a first dilating member side piece and a second dilating member side piece. The dilating member is moveable between a closed configuration in which the first and second dilating member side pieces are adjacent, and an open configuration in which the first and second dilating member side pieces are spaced apart. The dilating member tapers in cross-sectional area going in a direction from the head proximal end to the head distal end. A sharp tip is at the head distal end. A gripping member is connected to the head proximal end, and is actuatable to move the dilating member between the closed configuration and the open configuration.

  • Publication number: 20210346623
Abstract: A mechanical ventilation system comprises a plurality of ventilation therapy sub-systems. Each of the ventilation therapy sub-systems is adapted to assist a respiratory function of the patient. The system also comprises a detector of the respiratory drive of the patient, an operator interface receiving one or more control parameters, and a main controller. The main controller assigns a therapeutic contribution to each of the ventilation therapy sub-systems based on the respiratory drive of the patient and on the control parameters. The controller modulates the respiratory drive of a patient by controlling each of the plurality of the ventilation therapy sub-systems according to its assigned therapeutic contribution. Distinct ventilation therapy sub-systems may apply negative pressure on the abdomen of the patient, deliver a non-pressurizing inspiratory flow to the patient, or induce a positive pressure in the airways of the patient.

  • Patent number: 11116925
Abstract: A device for providing ventilatory assist to a patient has a manifold having an inspiratory port to receive an inspiratory flow from an inspiratory supply line, an interface port connectable to an external end of an endotracheal tube inserted in a patient's trachea and an expiratory port configured to receive an expiratory flow from the endotracheal tube via the interface port. An inspiratory lumen has a distal end insertable in the endotracheal tube. A cross-section of the inspiratory lumen is smaller than that of the endotracheal tube to allow gas flowing in the endotracheal tube. The inspiratory flow is directed to the inspiratory lumen, or to the endotracheal tube, or at once to the inspiratory lumen and to the endotracheal tube.

  • Patent number: 11058415
Abstract: A suture guide includes a first part having a first base piece and a plurality of first needle portions joined to the first base piece. Each first needle portion has a respective first needle portion sidewall. The suture guide further includes a second part having a second base piece and a plurality of second needle portions joined to the second base piece. Each second needle portion has a respective second needle portion sidewall. The first part and second part are moveable between a separated configuration and a joined configuration. In the separated configuration, the first needle portions are spaced away from the second needle portions. In the joined configuration, each one of the first needle portions is positioned adjacent and cooperates with a respective one of the second needle portions to form a needle.

  • Publication number: 20210045751
Abstract: A kit of parts for perihepatic packing includes a sac, at least one securing device, and a first inflation/deflation device. The sac has front and back walls, and a periphery. The front and back walls are joined together along the periphery to define an enclosure. The periphery has top and bottom edges, and the sac is foldable to a folded configuration in which the top and bottom edges are brought towards each other. The top edge has a notch extending inwardly towards the bottom edge. The sac has first and second side portions on first and second sides of the notch. At least a portion of the sac is translucent. The securing device facilitates securing of the sac in the folded configuration. The first inflation/deflation device adds a fluid to the enclosure to inflate the sac or removes the fluid from the enclosure to deflate the sac.
