Patent number: 9304310Abstract: A STED microscope for producing a 3D image. The microscope has an excitation laser source for providing an excitation laser beam and a depletion laser source for providing stimulated emission depletion laser beam. The excitation beam is capable of exciting fluorescent markers in a sample placed in the sample region and the depletion beam is capable of inducing stimulated emission in the fluorescent marker in the sample in a region around the excitation beam to restrict the size of the region within which the fluorescent markers are excited and wherein the depletion laser source goes through an optical element which creates a cone refractive pattern which induces stimulated emission in the fluorescent marker in the sample. The shape of the light hollow of the cone refractive pattern varies at different distances from the source. This depth profile can be used to distinguish between positions at varying depths within a sample to create a 3D image.Type: GrantFiled: December 14, 2012Date of Patent: April 5, 2016Assignee: UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEEInventors: Edik U. Patent number: 9229939Abstract: A system for arranging searchable items, such as digital images or multimedia icons for presentation on a graphical user interface. The system has an optimizer module which minimizes a cost function for arranging items in a layout space and is applied to one or more predetermined characteristics of the items. The optimizer module also creates a mixture distribution by considering each item as having a spatial distribution in the layout space and controls the entropy of the mixture distribution in order to maximize the extent to which each item occupies a separate position in the layout space. A Renderer module then renders the layouts to generate a display.Type: GrantFiled: January 28, 2010Date of Patent: January 5, 2016Assignee: The University of DundeeInventors: Stephen McKenna, Ruixuan Wang, Annette Ward

Publication number: 20150246847Abstract: A method and apparatus for metalizing a substrate by heating and applying a voltage across an ion exchange substrate to embed metallic ions from a metallic layer within the ion exchange substrate by a process of ion exchange. The resultant as-diffused substrate has metallic ions are distributed substantially homogeneously across the substrate. This may be metalized by applying a pulsed laser beam to a surface of the as-diffused substrate at or near a concentration of metallic ions such that the energy of the laser causes the conversion of the metallic ions in the as-diffused substrate into metal atoms at or near the point at which the laser pulse is incident upon the as-diffused substrate thereby creating a metalized substrate with a surface pattern defined by the movement of the laser beam across the surface of the as-diffused substrate.Type: ApplicationFiled: September 14, 2012Publication date: September 3, 2015Applicant: THE UNIVERSITY OF DUNDEEInventors: Amin Abdolvand, Stefan Wackerow
