  • Patent number: 11136777
Abstract: Although Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs), as alternatives for the corrosive steel reinforcement in concrete structures, have shown promising performance under gravity loads, their performance under reversal cyclic loading is still one of the main concerns. The linear behavior of FRP reinforcement has a two-sided effect on the seismic performance of FRP-reinforced concrete (RC) moment-resisting frames. Although the linear nature of FRP reinforcement could be advantageous in terms of limiting the residual damage after an earthquake event, it lowers the energy dissipation of the structure which can compromise its seismic performance. Disclosed herein is the addition of steel plates at selected locations in moment-resisting frames to improve seismic performance of FRP-RC structures while still being able to take advantage of its linear behaviour (minimal residual damage after earthquake). The effectiveness of the proposed solution was tested both experimentally and analytically.

  • Patent number: 11060533
Abstract: A single-rod hydrostatic actuator or pump-controlled actuator, comprises a hydrostatic pump connected in a closed circuit to a single-rod hydraulic cylinder where the cylinder velocity is directly controlled by the pump flow, without the need of intermediary valves. Due to the absence of throttling losses, the efficiency of hydrostatic actuators is considerably superior to the efficiency of conventional valve-controlled circuits. However, because of the differential areas at the cap and rod sides of the cylinder, the flows coming into and out of the cylinder do not match. Several attempts have been made to this date to produce a stable, robust and reliable circuit that can be used in everyday applications but no circuit has ever been conceived to reach the high standards of reliability and robustness required by industry. The current invention solves the problem of the differential flows with a design that is reliable, oscillation-free and robust.

  • Patent number: 10927856
Abstract: Pump-controlled hydraulic circuits are more efficient than valve-controlled circuits, as they eliminate the energy losses due to flow throttling in valves and require less cooling effort. Presently existing pump-controlled solutions for single rod cylinders encounter an undesirable performance during certain operating conditions. Novel circuit designs employ use of different charge pressures on a pair of pilot-operated charging-control valves or different piston areas and/or spring constants on a shuttle-type charging control valve to shift a critical loading region in a load-force/actuator-velocity plane to a lower load force range, thereby reducing the undesired oscillations experienced in the response of the typical critical loading region.

  • Patent number: 10898079
Abstract: Detection of intravascular plaque in OCT images is carried out by obtaining images of vascular tissue from a vascular component by OCT either in a static mode of a single image or in a dynamic mode where the images are obtained by scanning. The method acts by dividing the OCT image into different regular regions, calculating different texture features for each of the above regions with a reduced set of less than a full set of the 26 Haralick textural features, using a clustering algorithm to segment the image defined by its texture features calculated above into different regions and transforming the segmented image back from its representation using texture features to its space-domain representation. The method uses three or four texture features where the reduced sets can be f1, f 2, and f14 (ASM at 0°, Inertia at 0° and ASM at 90°).

  • Patent number: 10728981
Abstract: Low cost and low power LED lamps exhibit current harmonic contents due to their nonlinear characteristics. A large scale lighting network requires tens to hundreds LED lamp installations, the resultant harmonic currents pollute the grid seriously. Furthermore, light intensity fluctuations are becoming a concern nowadays to many users, as a safety and a health problems. This phenomenon is mainly caused by heavy loads as they lead to voltage fluctuations and deteriorating in PQ and hence visual flickering in LED lamps. A single phase transformer-less unified power quality conditioner (UPQC) topology is provided with its controls to mitigate all PQ problems in a network.

  • Patent number: 10693393
Abstract: A new tri-electrode topology reduces the control voltage requirement for electrostatic actuators. Conventional parallel plate actuators are dual-electrode systems, formed by the MEMS structure and the drive electrode. By placing a perforated intermediate electrode between these elements, a tri-electrode configuration is formed. This topology enables a low voltage on the intermediate electrode to modulate the electrostatic force of the higher voltage drive electrode, whose voltage remains fixed. Results presented show that in comparison to conventional parallel plate electrostatic actuators, the intermediate electrode's modulating voltage can be as low as 20% of normal, while still providing the full actuation stroke.

  • Patent number: 10438406
Abstract: A novel methodology for computing the medial axis/skeleton of a discrete binary object using a ‘divide and conquer’ algorithm, in which any 3D object is first sliced into a series of 2D images in X, Y and Z directions. Then, a geometric (Voronoi) algorithm is applied on each 2D image to extract the respective medial axis. This information is then combined to reconstruct the medial axis of the original 3D object using an intersection technique. An optional 3D interpolation step to achieve continuous connected skeletons uses Delaunay triangles and a spherical search to establish the nearest neighboring points in 3D space to interpolate between. Test results show that the proposed 3D Voronoi and optional interpolation algorithms are able to accurately and efficiently extract medial axes for complex 3D objects as well. Finally, an axis-smoothing algorithm using the same Delaunay triangle and spherical test is operable to remove unwanted noise from the extracted medial axis.

  • Patent number: 10381953
Abstract: A bidirectional bridgeless buck-boost power converter circuit is provided that can function as both a voltage source inverter (VSI) circuit to transform direct current (DC) voltage to alternating current (AC) voltage and as a power factor corrector (PFC) circuit to transform AC voltage to DC voltage. The disclosed converter fully utilizes inductors to form a CL filter and buck-boost converter energy storage element. Thus, low inductance chokes are used in the converter, which leads to a higher power density and is more cost-effective. Further, the bridgeless configuration minimizes conduction losses of semiconductors, and coupled with the use of low inductance chokes this improves system efficiency.
