Abstract: A compacted sustained release composition for delivering a drug as an active ingredient to the gastro-intestinal tract comprises an effective amount of the active ingredient in mixture with xanthan gum and an excipient, the active ingredient comprising in excess of 40 percent by weight of the total of the active ingredient and the xanthan gum, the mixture being in the form of a unit dose in capsule or tablet form. In addition to niacin, the active ingredient may be an analgesic, antipyretic, anti-inflammatory agent, vitamin, electrolyte replenisher, decongestant, antihistamine, and useful bacteriological organisms for the gastro-intestinal tract.

Abstract: A high-fiber, consumable bulk fiber composition, which may be used as a laxative, comprises powdered psyllium husks agglomerated with a water soluble, low viscosity gum, preferably gum acacia, to form a dry, free-flowing, water dispersible dietary fiber combinate. To form the dietary fiber combinate, the powdered psyllium husks are mixed with an aqueous solution of the water soluble, low viscosity gum, preferably by fluid bed agglomeration, and dried. The composition is employed to treat constipation by ingesting an effective amount of the dietary fiber combinate dispersed in water.

The composition may be combined with one or more suitable excipients and prepared as a unit dosage in the form of a compressed tablet, filled capsule, packet, or granule for various defoaming applications.
