Abstract: A method for achieving a biocidal effect by means of the application of quinone compounds similar to menadione in the prevention of development or eradication of the presence of autotrophic or heterotrophic microorganisms in masses of water, preferably ballast water in marine practice, or in animals. When the method is performed in water it provides for a simple mixing of a series of compounds into the mass of liquid to be treated, whereas if one intends to use the biocidal properties of the described compounds in the zootechnical field, the compounds are incorporated in medicinal compositions, which are then administered to the animals to be treated.
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for the treatment of water pools, preferably fresh or salt water in basins of any size, waters in conduits for civil and industrial use, and ballast waters in the maritime practice. Aim of the invention is to remove biological contamination by plant and animal organisms. Particularly, this method exploits thebiocidal properties of some of the menadione derivatives.
