  • Patent number: 5490554
Abstract: A teeming arrangement for a continuous casting apparatus comprises a tundish, a casting nozzle which projects from the bottom of the tundish, and a stopper rod for regulating flow through the casting nozzle. The nozzle has an inlet end and an outlet end and narrows progressively from each of these ends to the middle of the nozzle. The distance from the middle of the nozzle to either end is at least 7 cm. The stopper rod is movable between a closed position in which it seals the middle of the nozzle and an open position in which the nozzle is unobstructed. In the open position, the stopper rod and the nozzle define an annular gap, and the gap has a section which extends from the inlet end of the nozzle partway to the middle and narrows in a direction from the inlet end towards the outlet end. During casting, molten material is discharged from a bath in the tundish via the nozzle and forms a molten pool in a mold.

  • Patent number: 5469822
Abstract: An oil pan for a combustion engine includes two extrusions which are welded to one another so as to form an elongated chamber. The ends of the chamber are closed by covers. At least two partitions are disposed one above the other inside the chamber. The partitions extend transversely of the chamber and are carried by holders provided on the internal surfaces of the extrusions. Each of the partitions has an oil deflecting portion as well as two flat projections which protrude to opposite sides of the respective oil deflecting portion and serve to connect the partitions to the holders. The projections of each partition define a horizontal support plane for the respective partition while the oil deflecting portions define vertical surfaces for damping oil surges.

  • Patent number: 5370173
Abstract: Process and apparatus for vertical continuous casting of metal in at lest one hot-top mold with metal supplied at constant level. The object of the invention is to provide a process and an apparatus that make it possible, while supplying metal at constant level, to avoid non-uniform temperature gradients, turbulence, and waste of metal. According to the invention this is achieved by coordinating the level, flow rate and distribution of molten metal to each hot-top mold from the outlet opening of a smelting furnace.

  • Patent number: 5343933
Abstract: Process and apparatus for the continuous casting of aluminum alloys in multiple moulds to form continuous castings of improved quality. The invention comprises supplying gas at a predetermined gas flow rate to each mould during the mould filling stage, sensing the gas pressure during the second casting or cooling stage and increasing or reducing the gas flow rate to maintain a predetermined gas pressure in the moulds during the continuous extrusion process.

  • Patent number: 5330555
Abstract: The invention relates to a process and apparatus for manufacturing low-gas and pore-free aluminum casting alloys by vacuum degasification and densification of the melt. Contact between the aluminum melt and the atmospheric humidity of the alloying process, from refining to continuous casting of the cast bars, is kept extremely short, so that effective vacuum degasification, and a high cooling rate, can prevent the formation of gas pores. After the metal melt is alloyed in a smelting furnace, the melt is fed through a system of gutters directly to at least one vacuum furnace. Refining components are added in the vacuum furnace and heating is conducted to provide the pouring temperature required for continuous casting.

  • Patent number: 5158389
Abstract: A coupling including a first hollow section having longitudinal corrugations and a second section having an aperture therein. The coupling is made according to the method including the steps of inserting the first hollow section having longitudinal corrugations into the aperture in the second section so that at least a portion thereof including the corrugations extends into and beyond the aperture, the first hollow section being selected so that its cross-sectional length exceeds the perimeter of the aperture. At least the portion of said first hollow section beyond said aperture is then expanded so as to smooth the corrugations, while avoiding stretching the wall of the first hollow section whereby the exterior size of the hollow section exceeds the entire perimeter of the aperture and the cross-sectional length remains unchanged.
