  • Patent number: 4611672
Abstract: A drilling bit, such as a crenellated drilling bit for fluid-jet supported rotary drilling in rock comprises a nozzle for directing a jet of high-pressure fluid against rock material being bored. In addition to transporting away rock chips, the jet penetrates fissures in the rock and supports the breaking down of the rock structure by the drilling bit. Since such nozzles tend to wear more rapidly than the cutting edges of the drilling bit, a readily exchangeable nozzle insert is provided. The nozzle insert is seated in a retaining body incorporated in the drilling bit and is held in the retaining body by a threaded annular cap. The annular cap has a hexagonal recess for accommodating a tool such as an Allan-key.

  • Patent number: 4594924
Abstract: The liquid jet cutting apparatus contains a cutter head with a nozzle block and a jet exit opening which communicates with a jet discharge passage. A jet of a pressurized liquid cutting medium is formed in the cutter head and the jet exiting from the jet exit opening passes through the jet discharge passage without contacting the wall thereof. The jet discharge passage communicates through an opening in its wall with a pressure transmission line connecting a gas space formed in the jet discharge passage with a pressure sensor. A transmitter is operatively associated with the pressure sensor and is operated when the pressure in the gas space of the jet discharge passage exceeds or drops below a predetermined pressure threshold value. The transmitter acts upon an actuator or control member of a cut-off device or throughflow regulator which is arranged in the liquid supply line which supplies the pressurized liquid cutting medium to the cutter head.

  • Patent number: 4580614
Abstract: An aftercooler for a horizontal continuous casting system is comprised of a plurality of individual cooling elements adapted to be positioned in contact with the strand after it leaves the mold. Each of the cooling elements has a passage for the flow of a fluid cooling medium through it and either or both of the contact pressure of the element against the strand and the flow rate of cooling medium may be adjusted to control the rate of cooling to suit the solidification characteristics of the metal being cast. Preferably, a plurality of sets of cooling elements are sequentially disposed along the length of the strand immediately downstream of the mold, each of the sets being disposed circumferentially around the strand so as to cool it on all sides. Control of the contact pressure and cooling medium flow rate is effected by a computer which compares measured values of cooling medium temperatures and flow rates in the elements with stored data representing desired characteristics for the metal being cast.

  • Patent number: 4554041
Abstract: The use of thermally insulated bodies is determined by their insulative properties, on the one hand, and by the economy of their fabrication on the other hand. A particularly simple method for manufacturing a thermally insulated body, e.g. a pipe, with inner and outer shells, especially with metallic inner and outer shells, forming an intermediate space which is filled with porous particulate and/or porous powdered insulating material, evacuated and hermetically sealed consists in first evacuating the intermediate space between the inner and outer shell, maintaining the space under vacuum and then introducing the insulating material from a reservoir maintained under vacuum and sealing the intermediate space.

  • Patent number: 4483708
Abstract: A method of regulating the melting rate of a self-consumable electrode during electroslag remelting in a slag bath, wherein the lowering speed of the electrode which is to be remelted, the length of which is determined, is regulated in consideration of maintaining a set or reference value of the melting rate and the current intensity and/or the potential. There is continuously determined the weight of the part of the electrode immersing into the slag bath from the actual total electrode weight and the length of the electrode above the surface of the slag bath and such is compared with a set or reference value and altered when there is present a deviation of the quotient U.sub.Ref and J.sub.Ref, wherein the former represents the reference potential or voltage and the latter the reference current, and the product remains constant. The actual melting rate is compared with a set or reference melting rate and when there is present a deviation there is correspondingly altered the product of J.sub.Ref and U.sub.Ref.
