Abstract: A bit holder consisting of steel, said bit holder comprising a bore for accommodating the bit shaft and being welded to the cutting head of a cutting machine, characterized in that the bit holder consists of a part of heat-resistant steel of high strength and of a foot consisting of an unalloyed or low alloy steel of good weldability and being welded to said foot over the whole contacting area. In making the holder a blank corresponding to the part accommodating the bit shaft is over the whole contacting area welded to a blank corresponding to the foot to provide a composite blank which is subsequently forged in a forging die.

Abstract: A bearing arrangement for a tilting trunnion of a metallurgical vessel, in particular a converter in a steel making plant, has an inner race, an outer race, bearing bodies arranged therebetween, and at least one sensor device with a sensor pin. The sensor device penetrates the outer race and contacts the inner race forming a sensing point. Also, the sensor device has a fixed point with the sensor pin being movable relative to the fixed point and the distance between the sensing point and the fixed point being measurable.

Abstract: A releasable hub-shaft connection mechanism for transmitting strong torques has a shaft, a hub surrounding the shaft, and at least one bore that penetrates the shaft and the hub. The bore turns into a recess in the region of one of the front faces of the hub and has an axis parallel to the axis of the shaft. An eccentric clamping bolt is inserted in the bore and has an eccentric head portion which is rotatable into a clamping position relative to an engaging face of the recess.

Abstract: A plant for refining molten pig iron has a converter surrounded by a carrying ring which is tiltable about a horizontal axis by oppositely arranged carrying trunnions and at least one water-cooled hook-shaped blowing lance which looks like an inverted U. The lance is liftably and lowerably arranged on a vertically stationary, but horizontally rotatable, vertical lance guide located at a position lateral of the converter and outside its tilting area. At least one lance car guides the water-cooled lance on the vertically stationary lance guide.

Abstract: Device for guying a movable cutting machine, particularly a cutting machine provided with a caterpillar drive, in its operating position, and for moving this cutting machine in an ascending gallery being consolidated by means of supporting frames formed of caps and props or posts, characterized in that on the frame of a cutting machine there is provided at least one connecting member for at least one tension member formed of a chain or of a cable and in that the tension member is adapted to be, with interposition of a winch, connected to at least one further connecting member arranged on the cap of at least one supporting frame and releasably connected to said cap.

Abstract: A plate mould with a rectangular cross-section for continuously casting steel slabs has end walls that are tiltably adjustable and two adjustment drives at each end wall and link plates connecting each end wall and its pertaining adjustment drives in a four-bar-linkage manner.

Abstract: In a method of producing fine-grain sheet or plate, in particular fine-grain plate with a thickness of more than 50 mm, of austenitic steels by hot rolling billets or slabs in a number of passes, the mean velocity of the reduction in thickness (v in mm/min) achieved in a plurality of subsequent passes in dependence upon the ferrite content (f in %) of the steels is chosen in a manner that up to a ferrite content of 3.5%, the mean velocity of the reduction in thickness is more than 150 mm/min, and at a ferrite content of more than 3.5%, it is above a value given by the relationship v = 3.8 f.sup.2 - 60 f + 315, the deformation carried out in this manner amounting to at least 30%.

Abstract: An apparatus for extracting a starter bar and for supporting and extracting a cast strand to be used in a continuous casting plant has at least two upper driving rollers arranged to form a first unit and at least two lower driving rollers arranged to form a second unit and a stand. Transverse carriers guided in the stand and are movable relative to each other, have the upper driving rollers mounted on them. Head beams articulately connect the transverse carriers at the ends thereof and adjustment drives are articulately connected to the ends of the head beams for adjustment of said first unit and said second unit relative to each other.

Abstract: A method of and arrangement for introducing a starter bar into the strand guide of a continuous casting plant has the starter bar introduced from above, foot part first, into the strand guide and lowered. An upper part of the strand guide is removable transverse to the strand axis so that an opening is formed in the strand guide. The starter bar is lowered after its foot part has been introduced, until the starter bar head has passed the opening, whereupon the removed strand part is returned into its initial position and the starter bar is moved upward until its head closes the mould.

Abstract: In a method of and apparatus for closing a tap hole of a metallurgical vessel for separating metal and slag compressed gas is introduced into the tap hole after the metal has been poured off, the gas being introduced in a direction contrary to the pouring-off direction of the metal. The gas is introduced in such a manner that air is sucked inwardly along the mouth of the tap hole to aid in the burning-off of deposits around such mouth.

Abstract: A lining arrangement for metallurgical vessels has a frame, a lifting scaffold arranged thereon comprised of at least two tube elements composed of tube pieces, and a working platform arranged on top of the lifting scaffold. The tube pieces are telescopically movable into one another.

Abstract: A fastening arrangement for a roller that is divided a number of times and is to be used in a continuous casting plant has supporting brackets arranged in the longitudinal direction of the roller. The brackets are provided with pocket-like recesses for accommodating outer and inner roller holding devices therein. Detachable bolting devices connect the outer roller holding devices with their respective supporting brackets, while the inner roller holding devices rest loosely in the respective pocket-like recesses.

Abstract: Apparatus for guying a movable cutting machine equipped with a caterpillar drive and for moving the machine on ascending galleries has at both sides of the cutting machine tension members formed of chains or ropes and led over winches. The tension members are adapted to be fixed on both sides of the cutting machine, with the forward ends and the rearward ends of the tension members being adapted to be fixed at stationary locations of the gallery, preferably by means of rock anchors.

Abstract: Device for consecutively supporting a drift by means of caps and posts or props in dependence on face advancement, said device being designed for lifting and for pressing the caps to be positioned against the mine roof, characterized in that a breast frame is provided for being suspended to the positioned caps in a manner to be shiftable in direction of face advancement, lifting beams forming a support for the caps to be positioned being supported on said breast frame for being lifted in upward direction and a crane being guided on the breast frame for being shifted in direction of face advancement.

Abstract: A strand guide for a continuous casting plant has oppositely arranged frame parts connected by drawing anchors and at least one of the frame parts is displaceable along the drawing anchors and fixable thereon. Two bushings with helical supporting faces are provided on each drawing anchor and rotatable therearound, and are fixed abutments are provided on each drawing anchor to countersupport the rotatable bushings. The displaceable frame part is guided on each drawing anchor between the two rotatable bushings.

Abstract: A supporting and guiding stand for continuously cast strands, in particular slabs, has rollers forming oppositely arranged roller paths to support the strand, uninterrupted longitudinal carriers accommodating the rollers, transverse carriers spaced along the longitudinal carriers, driven rollers journaled on the transverse carriers via brackets, and adjustment means provided for adjusting the driven rollers to the strand or to a starter bar.

Abstract: A starter bar for guiding and extracting cast strands of various thicknesses in continuous casting plants with arcuate guiding paths supporting the strands at opposite sides is comprised of pivotally connected link bodies arranged one behind the other. The bar has a thickness corresponding to the smallest or slightest thickness of the strands. Also, exchangeable locking pieces are provided between individual ones of the link bodies to assure that the starter bar is guided between the guiding paths without play.

Abstract: A tiltable metallurgical vessel arrangement, in particular a converter for a steel making plant, has carrying trunnions, a fixed bearing, an expansion bearing, bearing housings for the bearings, and force measuring means resting on a supporting construction with bearing housings resting on the force measuring means. Vertical sliding faces provided on each bearing housing and on the supporting construction at both sides of the carrying trunnion axes form guides and counter-guides that engage each other so as to prevent horizontal motion of the bearing housings in the direction of the axes of the carrying trunnions.

Abstract: A roller shell is rotatably mounted on a non-rotatable axle having an axial bore and is engageable with moving strip. A detector is non-rotatably mounted on said axle and comprises a magnet which produces a magnetic field and a sensing coil arranged to generate voltage signals in response to magnetic flux changes in said magnetic field. An annular rotor is disposed between said axle and said shell and non-rotatably connected to said shell and movable in said magnetic field to produce a predetermined magnetic flux change in said magnetic field in response to a predetermined angular movement of said shell. A lead is connected to said detector and extends in said axial bore and is arranged to transmit said voltage signals. In a hot strip mill, said axle is carried by pivoted arms tending to urge said shell against the underside of a strip contacting the top of said shell so as to support and tension said strip.
